There is now polling indicating a possible Newt Gingrich surge after Monday night's debate - A Rasmussen tracking survey has him just three points behind Mitt Romney. Notably, Rick Santorum may need to start wearing a lifebelt rather than a sweater vest - he appears to be sinking fast.
But the surest sign that the Romney campaign considers Gingrich the main threat here in South Carolina was a conference call just now in which top surrogates for the GOP frontrunner unloaded on the former House Speaker. It was quickly followed by web ad featuring Talent slamming Gingrich as an "Unreliable Leader" (also the title of the conference call).
The charges against Gingrich were delivered by ex-Senator Jim Talent and Representative Susan Molinari, who both served under him as House Speaker, and were pretty personal (though they didn't go there over Gingrich's his three wives and marital infidelitites).
Talent said: "He's been running as a reliable conservative leader who can represent our movement and our party. And he's not that. Because he's not reliable. Yes, he can say exciting things. He also says things which undermine the conservative movement and he says it in outrageous and destructive ways.'
He highlighted Gingrich's derisive comments about the Paul Ryan budget and his 2006 opposition to the Iraq surge as instances of his departing from conservative orthodoxy, saying that Ryan "got a taste of what we lived with in the 1990s" when House members were always "going home and having to clean up after our Speaker".

Tell Mittens that Newt will never clean his boots. Keep fighting the conservative revolution, Newt. Wear your scars as a badge of honor.
“[Andrew Jackson] was thirteen when he joined the South Carolina militia to fight in the Revolutionary War. After his capture, he was ordered to clean the boots of a British officer. Jackson refused. The officer then drew his sword and slashed Jackson across the forehead, leaving a scar.”
This next debate is really gonna be an exciting one to watch. For some reason, Romney seems to buckle under the pressure. We’ll see.
So sorry. I was bus reading the oppo research released today on Mittens. The “Romney book” is a very interesting read and should start to get everyone supporting someone else.
Actually, Susan Molinari was never married to Joe Scarborough. She is married to former Rep. Bill Paxon.
Because a whore-mongering, drug using, alcohol soaked, glutton will stand out in Congress....how?
Oops. I thought years ago during Clinton years they were married. I guess I’m getting old. Sorry
Talent (who I always respected as a conservative) baffles me in that he is (and has been) going out on such a limb for Romney who DOES NOT reflect his values (reminds me of when Lieberman was mouth-piecing for Algore).
I am disappointed in Talent, because I don;t really remember him being attacked for supporting or having to explain Newt. I DO remember Newt being abandoned when the Dems went after him (the same way Delay was).
Better a daawg than a dog.
When he ran for reelection for Senate he ran the Worst reelection campain ever. I personally heard him give up on his reelection two weeks before election day.
Guess who is Romney's campain manager for Missouri is?
Thats right,Jim Talent.
Suzie married Bill Paxon, but they were all part of the “cool kids” crowd in Congress during the ‘90s.
How much did Mittwit pay Talent? If Talent would have learned to say a few more exciting things (to go along with a good voting record) maybe he would still be a senator and Missouri would have been spared the humiliation of enduring Claire McCaskill as its senator. Time for Talent to sit back down and STFU.
Not sure you are correct about Talent being Romeny’s MO CAMPAIGN MGR. I know he IS a key member of the team — whether it is as an adviser or coordinator, he is on the econ advisory team— but Senator Blunt IS the lead on his congressional campaign.
You consider Santorum a spoiler yet Gingrich came in 4th in Iowa and 5th in New Hampshire. If anything, Gingrich is a spoiler. Good logic!
Hardly,
Santorum got a boomlet at the right time, nothing more, he’s already faded and will continue to because he isn’t being supported because of anything he’s done, but because he was the last guy standing that wasn’t Romney. Romney launched attack dogs against Gingrich when he started to rise, and non romney folks who were beginning to move to Newt looked for another option and Santorum was the last guy standing.
Now that the heat is on, and folks are going to actually investigating and seeing Santorum’s record etc, he will (and already is) fading, just like Cain, Bachmann, Perry etc before him.
Santorum won’t see anything near 20% of any primary from here on out, but if he stays in the race and draws 10-15% which he will likely do at least for a while, Romney continunes “winning” with only 30-40% of the vote.
Like it or not there are and only ever have been 2 first teir republican candidates in this race, and Santorum was never one of them.
Have fun with RINO Gingrich. So I guess you believe his Global Warming position and health insurance mandate idea. Have fun with that! SANTORUM FOR PRESIDENT!
