There is now polling indicating a possible Newt Gingrich surge after Monday night's debate - A Rasmussen tracking survey has him just three points behind Mitt Romney. Notably, Rick Santorum may need to start wearing a lifebelt rather than a sweater vest - he appears to be sinking fast.
But the surest sign that the Romney campaign considers Gingrich the main threat here in South Carolina was a conference call just now in which top surrogates for the GOP frontrunner unloaded on the former House Speaker. It was quickly followed by web ad featuring Talent slamming Gingrich as an "Unreliable Leader" (also the title of the conference call).
The charges against Gingrich were delivered by ex-Senator Jim Talent and Representative Susan Molinari, who both served under him as House Speaker, and were pretty personal (though they didn't go there over Gingrich's his three wives and marital infidelitites).
Talent said: "He's been running as a reliable conservative leader who can represent our movement and our party. And he's not that. Because he's not reliable. Yes, he can say exciting things. He also says things which undermine the conservative movement and he says it in outrageous and destructive ways.'
He highlighted Gingrich's derisive comments about the Paul Ryan budget and his 2006 opposition to the Iraq surge as instances of his departing from conservative orthodoxy, saying that Ryan "got a taste of what we lived with in the 1990s" when House members were always "going home and having to clean up after our Speaker".

Make Romney remember my 12 hours on top of an SUV, at 70 MPH, to the point of getting a sick stomach.
Don't let Mitt treat conservatives like a dog!
Monday night may have bloodied his nose, but Sarah’s back door endorsement of Newt last night should make for some very interesting poll results along about Friday. Rush had a very favorable reaction to Newt too. These “almost” endorsements are very influential.
The ground is shifting towards Newt.
That’s what really has Mittens scared.
Problem was Mitt borrowed money from banks to insert into those failing companies, then immediately transferred most of that cash to Bain. When those companies went bankrupt, he kept all the money and the creditors got stuck with the bill. On 3 out of 4 of Bain’s biggest acquisitions, they went bankrupt yet Bain profited on them, keeping that money instead of paying back the banks. Romney was a deadbeat.
Destructive. Unreliable. Outrageous.
It’s why we like Newt. ;)
Mitt’s going to implode on Thursday after Newt uses the 15% Mitt tax line.
Santorum didn’t do anything.. all he didn’t do or say anything.... all he did was manage to be the last man standing... that’s it.. that’s all he’ll ever be.
He has no support based on anything meanigful, other than he’s not romney and he’s not newt, that’s it.
All he’s doing is splitting the non romney vote, and keeping Romney on top via creating a situation where 30-40% will win you the plurality. By design or by coincidence it doesn’t matter.
Santorum has no chance of winning, and will fade, the only question is will it be soon enough to prevent romney from winding up the nominee or not.
Santorum is playing spoiler, nothing more.
Newt should make a video with several people in the 90’s who loyally worked with and for him and helped him balance the budget, cut taxes and pass legislation even in the face of great opposition from those who were disloyal, self serving and power hungry.
I meant 3 out of 10 of Bain’s biggest acquisitions.
It would be preferable if Mitt were to learn from Newt’s example. Newt has many faults, but he doesn’t start off every statement about Obama with “well, he’s a nice guy and he means well but he’s just over his head”.
go Newt....we will regain our country! and not all capitolistic practices are good...sorry to inform the Romney folks. Obama will make mincemeat out of Romney’s record and firing of people apparently unecessarily in order to put the bottom line first. I am in sales and while it is important for me to make good money, my service to my clients comes first.

Well put. My sentiments almost exactly.
Mittens is no choice. I can't vote for him because a couple of weeks ago I vowed here at FR to be struck down by God if I do. (shrug)
One good thing Santorum did in the last debate was chime in on how false Romney and Ron Paul’s ads have been against him. This will help back up Newts claims of falseness in the ads. Fox has been calling Newt a whiner and a crybaby to marginalize him. Santorum just gave him credibility in his complaints. Sarah Palin and Limbaugh drove it home.
Romney: Medicare Fraud
Gingrich: Ex associates don't like him
Is Gingrich worse because his old associates don't like him, or is Romney worse because he stiffed the Taxpayers as Board Member of Company fined over 100 million for medicare fraud?
I won’t vote for Mittens either. There are some that say you and I are defacto voting for Obama.
I always ask them. Whats the policy difference between Mittens and Obama?
I don’t think I have ever got an answer.
"You can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!"
"Car 3, Car 3... Proceed to possible 205 on main"
Because I was afraid of worms, Roxanne! Worms!
Romney’s newest ad ought to really get the fireworks started. I heard the latest poll numbers today on the radio today as I was riving back from a business appointment and they don’t look good for Mitt. He seems to be losing ground, they had Mitt at 30 and Newt at 29. Things are really, really tightening. That news, I’m sure, sent Mitt into a panic.
As I said, this is gonna be fun to watch. lol
