I wouldn’t necessarily argue that what Romney did should be illegal. It’s just highly unethical that they would essentially screw over their partners and their employees for their own profits. And even moreso since Romney portrays himself as a “turnaround artist” when a lot of their work was simply based on getting short-term cash out of the companies even if it made the companies unhealthy for the long-term. There do seem to be times where Bain crossed the line and got threatened with a lawsuit by the creditor.

I would only add that those accounting gimmicks that you mention are based on laws passed by a government that chooses to meddle in the free market.

It's not that Romney's actions should be made illegal. It that our bankruptcy laws, passed by our government, makes it legal for people to pocket other people's money from a bankruptcy.
