My oldest daughter was in girl scouts for a short time, as her friends had joined. It was mainly a few innocuous meetings, and then the big cookie-sales push. With their money earned, the troop leader then organized a “spa day” at the mall.
Once we heard that, we dropped it.
The organization used to be worthwhile. Skills learning, working on badges, learning cooperation, patriotism.
A coworker saw a picture of my young sons hiking, with their web gear, fatigues, and all; he asked if they were in scouting, and when I said no, then asked where they got all the gear (military surplus, not Boy Scouts). I told him it was all over flea markets and army navy stores, and useful in camping/backpacking.
I think he still believes it must have been a Scout troop (in cammies?). When other people have asked why they weren’t in Scouts, I replied that my family/friends take them camping more than Scouts would.
