Newt Gingrich's fluent, policy-rich performances in the early debates, laced with derision for the media's attempts to question the Republican candidates, propelled him to the front of the GOP pack in early December.
His command of the stage here in Myrtle Beach for the 16th (yep, there have been that many, and the next is in Charleston on Thursday) could just be the lifeline he needs to achieve the task he has set himself - overcoming Mitt Romney's clear lead in the South Carolina polls to win the state on Saturday.
Romney was under pressure over releasing his tax returns (he eventually said that he would "probably" do so in April), on why he had not objected as Massachusetts governor to felons on parole having the right to vote and he gave an awkward, fumbling response to a softball about whether he had been hunting since 2007, even mixing up moose and elk.
Gingrich, however, ... scored quite a few points against Romney and the former Speaker's fluency with policy and ability to dissect questions and make a big-picture conservative case against Obama made him the night's big winner.
There were two standing ovations for Gingrich in the hall, where 3,000 Republicans roared, cheered ...
Gingrich said that in the debate room "there was a strong sense that somebody finally just had the courage to tell the truth about how we've got to go about helping people".
"...it's clear if you look at the polls the only conservative who can beat Romney in South Carolina is Newt Gingrich... we have five days to win South Carolina. I think we will win South Cariolina."
A lot of conservatives are queasy about Romney and unconvinced that he could beat the President in November.

Yep, I call ‘em as i see ‘em!!! No doubt about it, Newt Gringrich hit it out of the ballpark on numbers of occasions last night!!! Gotta give credit where credit is due!!! Newt put in a fantastic performance. IMHO, best debate ever!!! I hope this race runs out a long way!!! Why? Because it makes our team stronger with every debate session. Shucks, even Rick Perry was in the game last night!!! Whoever wins this folks, we must all get behind and support he or she to the maximum.
The “real” enemy is truly POTUS Barack Hussein Obama and his Democrat Party. Stealing a very popular “Black American” phrase, “Eyes-On-the-Prize” is the game. Obama must be defeated, or America will continue to melt away and become a weak, third world nation.
It is really a crying shame that so many Black Americans fail to get a true readout on evil Obama, and, how really dangerous Obama is to the future of Black America!!! Sad!!! But....alas, it will not change. The exact same way African Blacks marched onto the slave ships at the bidding of their Black Muslim slave traders without so much as a whimp of protest....is the exact same way they continue to destroy their future and the future of their children, in worship of the false God and leader Barack Hussein Obama!!! Once again, you can lead a horse to water, but.....you cannot make him drink!!!! Go figure!!!
Video of slap down of Juan has gone viral! Great news for Newtons, finally!
H-mama, I think you’re exactly right. I posted it last night. Williams deliberately put a fast ball right over the plate for Newt to slam out of the park.
To those who disagree- consider: twice, Williams said- “you went into a black church” [to give his remarks on work ethic]. Which is to say, you, a conservative Republican, actually went to a wholly black audience to speak to these issues as they may concern Black Americans.
That’s saying Newt was seeking an open dialogue with an effected audience- and not telling the audience what it might want to hear-— but speaking openly and honestly.
That demonstrates Newt has integrity and the courage of his convictions-— and Mr. Williams, imo, was letting every one else know that.
Debate Organizer: OK, Juan, here are your questions.
Juan: OK...wait, Bret, why are all these racially tinged?
Debate Organizer: Well, you are the black guy, Juan. Show us a token of respect, eh?
Yep, that’s how I took Juan, too. He set up Newt so Newt could get his points across.
Anyone who doubts this should look again at the video. Juan never sounded upset or looked upset.
I actually like Juan; he’s not a rabid liberal and oftentimes will admit/agree to things contrary to his party’s stance, because he’s able to be reasonable and logical.
>Its not about *liking* Newt, its about LOVING your country.<
This bears repeating over and over. Romney will NOT beat Obama because he nauseates the base, no matter how much the RINO establishment wishes it were not so.
That’s what I’m saying: To get destroyed by 19% in a statewide election says there’s a very, very strong dislike for you.
I’d love to see a Constitutional Amendment that if you lose your home state (Al Gore, 2000) in a POTUS election, you can’t win period. If you’re home state hates you, what does that say?
Juan is very respected at FOX and knows that he can often make a point by setting up the situation. It’s like being given a topic at a debate. They don’t ask which side you want to argue, the just assign the subject and side. Same with a lawyer arguing a case. The may know their client is guilty, but they’re being paid to prove they are not.
Juan had a BIG jump in pay when he came to FOX. He does his job very well.
Yes, its hard for him to perform in front of conservative Republicans
Youve hit the nail on the head! Thats exactly his problem. Conservatism makes him uncomfortable, he begins to stutter and tries to drive all around the question to eat up time and get back to his memorized conservative talking points.
And when Rick S. Interrupted him during his rebuttal to say, “Answer the question,” it REALLY flustered Mitt. He stammered and his real arrogance shown through his dulcet fake vocal tones there a bit!
The Gang of Three (Newt, Santorum, Perry) all did very well, with Newt simply superb.
Romney fumbled a number of times, (he should call Sarah to help him distinguish between moose and elk....)
....and Ron Paul certified himself as a moron by saying he will abolish taxes.
BIG night for conservatives.
If Newt wins SC, he can survive a loss in Florida and roll on to SuperTuesday, which will be favorable for him (despite being out of it Virginia).
Not to mention the amusing gaffe about criminals being allowed to vote "after they leave office," and the not so amusing defense of Obama (saying he trusts Obama not to abuse his powers under the NDAA).
Yes Newt ruled last night. He gave Juan a wedgie and then took his lunch money.
----We're not voting for Miss Congeniality.
LOL!!
Personally, I think I'd like a candidate right now who isn't afraid of being called a jerk. No more weenies, please.
LOL!! Permission to steal the line, please?
Well said.
If there is anyone who watched last nights debacle who didn’t see Newt as the smartest, most well spoken, and the one to do battle with Zero must have heads examined.
PAUL??? What a joke. He made himself look like a moron.
Mittless? If he is stammering at these softball questions by moderators firmly in his back pocket, whats he gonna do in the viper pit with ZERO? Perry looked much better last night and gained ground. Santorum is not gonna win against Zero.
Newt won my vote last night. Had me Standing and cheering with a tear in my eye. At least with Newt you know we won’t get pushed around by other world leaders.
I'll bet Newt even did that without slipping into an ethnically-tinged dialect, a~la Hillary.
Certainly a National treasure for this time in our history.
