Santorum supported a Federal law that would have allowed convicted felons to vote after they had served their time in prison and probation and parole.

This is a terrible idea. If Santorum supports convicted felons, then I don't think I can support him.

I had thought Santorum was the best of the candidates. I never thought he was perfect but I thought he was the best choice. Now I need to rethink my position. I don't want to make the perfect the enemy of the good and I realize there is no candidate that I will always agree with. But this troubles me.

I'm not an expert on the voting record of Santorum but I saw enough to know that he is NOT a small gov't and he is NOT a states rights supporter. He is a union supporter...voted against national Right to Work legislation.

When Santorum endorsed Arlen Specter...he meant it!

Prison is where debt is paid. You can feel however you want about a person individually, but once they are out, debt paid (not on parole or probation) then rights should be reinstated. If they can’t vote then they’re not even citizens, we might as well kick them out of the country.

Uhhhh, where is it written in the Constitution that there is a universal ‘right’ to vote?

The states should put the filter on the masses of asses they deem fit to vote.

We need less MORONS voting, not more.

Santorum was a bottomfeeding candidate in Iowa that nobody attacked, .......It was a full on barrage against Newt. Santorum stayed out of the fight and was one of the last surviving turds floating to the top of the Iowa punchbowl along with Romney.

Santorum, Perry, and that freshly tasered wide-eyed sanduskite POS Ron Paul should all go play in traffic somewhere.

...But this troubles me.

Me too! This clown probably believes in sanctuary cities for illegal aliens.

In essence what he's saying is:

"Sex offenders, illegals, murderers, rapists, robbers... should be allowed to vote."

.

Bzzzzt, you lose. Thanks for playing.

I watched this segement on tv last night.
His statement has been mischaracterized.

He described a process by which a felon could APPLY to have his rights restored.
Each person’s case would be different and handled differently depending upon the person’s offense, sentence served, and behavior since their release.

He pointed out he was supporting the law that is already on the books in South Carolina.

To insinuate he simply wants all felons to be granted voting rights is simply not true.

I remember Chuck Colson commenting on his voting rights being retored after serving time for the Watergate scandal. I’m glad that Chuck Colson can vote again.

All I'm going to say regarding "felonies" is this. Take a look at US Code or your state laws and see just how many felonies are on the books.

I bet everyone here is a felon who hasn't been caught. I bet 99% of those here are felons or ex-felons and don't even know it.

A sobering thought for everyone on the "convicted felons are evil" side of the fence...

My understanding is that your second refusal of Obammy Care Individual Mandate is an automatic FELONY. That is currently still in effect and coming at us fast.

Anyone care to speculate what the feds will come after first when that happens?

The money or your guns?

He only supported this for some non-violent felons under certain circumstances, not all felons and certainly not violent felons. I still think he made a mistake, but it's not like he supports voting rights for murderers and rapists.

It was a bad call by Santorum and I wish he hadn't done it, but he's still the best viable choice available.

Watch the CSPAN video of Santorum and Newt (I recommend speeding through the shaking of hands meet-and-greet preceding each candidate's approach to the podium waiting area) and compare the two.

For me, two things are crystal clear.

1. Santorum is great, a fine conservative, with a nice grasp on the issues.

2. Gingrich massively outshines him in every way.

If you're going to disagree, watch the video first. :^) I really think a lot of Newt bashers and Santorum supporters (and I respect and sympathize with them -- we could do a helluva lot worse than Santorum!) are afraid to watch such an obvious and stark contrast between the two.

Which one of the two do you think would become flustered and tounge-tied when faced with the thundering rhetoric of Obama demagoguery?

Which one of the two do you think would connect passionately with the average American?

I'm in for Newt. Godspeed, Newt Gingrich.

The convicts are either finished being punished or they are not. If the punishment is not complete, keep them locked up. If the punishment is complete, release them and restore their rights.

they have done the time, done the parol, and paid their fines.

This is about APPLYING for restoration. This is already the law in most states including SC and FL.

This is a bogus attack.

Think martha stewart retoring her rights rather than some murderer. Violent felons have a more difficult road to restoration of civil rights.

BTW this includes jury duty.

What baffles me most, is why he would think this was something he had to clarify during the campaign season. When candidates point a political gun at their own heads and pull the trigger, I just watch in amazement.

I am not convinced that all felons need to lose their voting rights forever. If they have cleaned up their act, then I don’t have a problem with them voting. If they haven’t, or have been convicted several times, they shouldn’t be voting.
