Hearing to begin for voter ID challenge
Wisconsin State Journal ^ | 1-15-12

Posted on 01/15/2012 6:02:18 PM PST by afraidfortherepublic

A judge is scheduled to hear arguments this week about the constitutionality of Wisconsin's new voter photo identification law.

Supporters argue the Republican-authored law will help curtail fraud. Opponents counter the law disenfranchises groups of people who likely don't have identification, such as the poor, minorities and the disabled.

The League of Women Voters filed a lawsuit in Dane County against Gov. Scott Walker and state election officials challenging the law. The group argues the state constitution bars only children, felons and the mentally incompetent from voting and the Legislature improperly prohibited a new class of people — namely, those without IDs — from voting.

The state Justice Department has filed a motion to dismiss the case.

Judge Richard Niess is set to hear arguments on Thursday.

OK I support fully the need for honest eligible voters.

More importantly why aren’t the politicians of both Parties demanding voting methods that are 100% hack and corruption free and able to be audited fully by independents instead of allowing what we have, which are the corrupt networked black box machines that can count our votes at will and take our rights away?

Both Parties would prefer controlling us than working for their vote.

Why would the poor, minorities and disabled have less of a chance of having an id?

The argument has no merit.

Presumably the disabled have access to welfare programs. That requires an id.

There is no barrier to a minority having an id, none at all.

As for the poor, is it harder for them to get a driver’s license or id? There is a cost, but do they not get one anyway, for instance, if they are poor enough to get food stamps, do they not have to produce an id to receive them?

“...prohibited a new class of people — namely, those without IDs — from voting.”

This law does not prohibit anyone from voting. It requires that voters have an ID. Not quite the same as being a convicted felon. Typical leftist demagoguery.

It took several years in court but we finally have our Michigan ID law in place and it doesn’t seem to be a problem.

I guess I’m just a little bit kooky...but why should one not have to show some sort of identification to participate in an election.

He!!..I had to show i.d. to get on a plane. Or buy a beer...well once upon a time. :)

NOW will Republicans FINALLY stop participating in any way in debates or other activities sponsored by the LWV? Wasn't the LWV bitch who tried to stop the pledge of allegiance in 2010 enough to convince them?

All of these suits are filed in Dane County ... is it a simpering bed of liberal scum?

So exactly how do the above people conduct financial business. Everything I do financially, requires that I show I.D. This is nothing but more RAT BS.

It is in the Voter ID law that anyone who comes in to the DMV and says they can’t afford an ID, it will be provided to them paid by the “state” i.e. taxpayers of the state.

So, lack of money or disenfranchment is a moot point. The dems are just afraid they won’t be able to cheat their way through the elections.

Unfortunately, the WI Voter ID law will not be in effect yet for the Governor and senator recalls coming up soon.

Due to the Univ. Wisc., which is the real reason for the lawsuit. Requiring ID with address prevents students from voting multiple times (once on campus, again where they live off-campus, and then again, absentee, from their home location).

So, how do they get their welfare and disability checks? they have no verifiable identity? What a fraud. The state should ask the judge to order the local police to bring in ten random minorities and disabled citizens. then they should be asked to show their Id's. Even illegals have them.

That’s pretty much a Cityof Madison/Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison campus phenom. Dane is a large county, with a great many sensible conservatives. The city, too, cannot fairly be tagged a left wing cesspool, on the whole. But its liberal kookism is very active; not without cause is Madison dubbed Berkely of the Midwest.
I (a Univ. of Wis alum) have lived in and near Madison for some years, off and on, with an absence of a score of years between, and have many friends and acquaintances there.

In my state we call em “The League of Women Vultures”. A friend of mine (an arch-Conservative) joined just to harrass them, and enjoys just being a monkey-wrench in the group.

the state constitution bars only children, felons and the mentally incompetent from voting and the Legislature improperly prohibited a new class of people — namely, those without IDs non-residents, illegal aliens, and dead people.

(Fixed.) Darn law disenfranchises half the Democratic base.

......................The group argues the state constitution bars only children, felons and the mentally incompetent from voting .........................

Questions:

1. Without ID how do you determine the age of “children??”

2. Without ID how do you determine who is a “felon”??

3. Without ID how do you determine who is “mentally
incompetent” to vote??

In short, If someone shows up at a polling place, who determines if that person is allowed to vote???
