A federal judge disclosed Friday that former presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, a court source confirmed to CNN.
Edwards had sought a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin this month.
Attorneys and the federal judge met in a North Carolina courtroom Friday afternoon for a status hearing regarding the pending trial of Edwards, a former U.S. senator.
Edwards appeared at Friday's hearing. His lawyers had made the motion for a delay under seal, but some of its details were publicly revealed by the judge in the open hearing.

He doesn’t want to join Elizabeth. She will kick his a$$
Can’t be. He doesn’t have a heart.
I’m wondering if it’s life threatening, how come his surgery isn’t until next month? I’d think you’d get it done asap!
Oh, jeez, it’s not ‘heart’ condition for fracks sake, it’s HAIR condition!
We all have a ‘life threatening’ heart condition...it’s called age.
BS.
There's a good possibility they would be in different places. I can't believe God would let a trial lawyer in.
It’s just a ploy to draw disability - can’t chase ambulances with a bum ticker.
My cousin is a prison dentist, so I know they have doctors. I’m sure the NC Department of Corrections could get Edwards a cardiologist — if he really needed one.
I don’t believe this. Everything associated with this man is a lie. You can look it up.
Is it possible that Satan needs an ambulance chaser real soon?
I’m not sure Elizabeth was let in either. Not to be judgemental, but from the things I read about her, she wasn’t exactly a saint either.
John Edwards made his fortune suing doctors with bogus claims and wooing juries with fake tears. Now his fate and future may be in the hands of doctors who must pay inflated insurance premiums to practice. God does have a sense of humor.
Maybe it happened whule screwing the new broad as his wife was fighting cancer-—how appropos
The pink pony in prison. Too good to be true.
This is judicial sophistry, not that such is uncommon to all judges i.e. lawyers. There are thousands plus men who have life threatening heart conditions but how many could be excused from a crime or just a trial for any crime because of such a condition. This is a standout example of judiciary personal miscarriage of justice. Newt is right on this one i.e. judges must be made to go by law for all people not just personal opinions. If they can’t/won’t, terminate there participation in the justice system.
Because if he had a heart condition that was truly ‘life threatening’ then the surgery would be done immediately or in the very near future, not a month from now.
Unless he can’t find a doctor who will operate on him. Then maybe he can just channel some dead doctor and get better on his own.
