Sure -- they picked up impetus in the 19th century, which is the century I referred to. Marx, if you didn't know, was 19th century, as was Charles Dickens, who described conditions, and Charles Lamb (whence I learned the term "supernumerary" as applied to the unemployed). The Triangle Shirtwaist fire was 20th century, but barely -- 1911 and specifically led to the foundation of ILGW.

Neither livius nor I mentioned "discrimination."

And unless you're a great deal older than we are, you didn't live it either!
