It moves votes. It’s dumb, it’s ludicrous, but sometimes things that stupid work.
Like the guy in New Hampshire who wasn’t sure he was going to vote for Romney until John McCain endorsed him.
That worked. John McCain’s endorsement got Romney a vote.
If that worked, why shouldn’t an ad showing him speaking French cost him a vote? Both reasons are equally stupid.

Not so sure it’ll hurt Romney in South Carolina. Charleston is full of French heritage. And European companies are a very big deal in the Greenville-Spartanburg area.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of South Carolina GOPers are insulted by a message from Newt’s campaign that seems to assume the entire state is a bunch of uneducated rednecks who have a visceral distaste for anything French.
That just makes me sad. Are people really THAT shallow?
