Tim LaHaye endorses Newt Gingrich

Tim LaHaye, an influential Evangelical leader and author of the best-selling Christian book series, Left Behind, and his wife Beverly, the founder of Concerned Women of America, have endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Their significant endorsement may signal other Evangelicals to unite behind Gingrich in South Carolina and beyond to defeat former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the GOP presidential primary.

“Now that the Republican Presidential Primary has wound down to two front runners who can win, I would like to publicly endorse the proven conservative speaker of the House Newt Gingrich as the most qualified candidate to become the next president of the United states,” LaHaye said in a statement. “His record in office has a near unbroken record of Conservative commitment to the Judeo/Christian principles that have made this the greatest nation in the history of he world.”

In the statement, LaHaye writes that he has known Gingrich for thirty years and acknowledges that though Gingrich “is not perfect, none of us is.”

LaHaye writes that despite Gingrich’s past, which has made some religious voters hesitant, Gingrich can be trusted on issues that are important to social conservatives.

Isn’t there a theological problem with this?

Don’t Catholic politicians have a record of moving inexorably leftward once elected?

I guess that Dr LaHaye doesn’t want to be “Left Behind”!

your not an Evangelical I assume? These books are like the Harry Potter series, only for Christians written about the end times and the Rise of the Anti-Christ. They became really popular because back in the late 90’s, TBN produced a movie called “The Omega Code” that got everything thinking about the end times.

The more important endorsement is his wife, whom I did not know was CWA’s founder.

“LaHaye. Who?”

An evangelical pastor and writer. Not sure how wide his audience is these days. I read a couple of his books back in the ‘80s, but much decided I would rather spend my money and time reading C.S. Lewis or Francis Schaeffer.

Not sure how much this endorsement will help or hurt Newt.

Go Newt. The communists Democrats and the Republican RINO’s have thrown everything they can think of to destroy Gingrich and there is no doubt damage has been done. Currently using Bain as a wiping post that have blown it way out of proportion to what Newt was referring to. That was the job creation Romney professed, 100,000, which was BS.

Thank LaHaye for the endorsement.

I don't think it can hurt.

“CWA? What is CWA?”

“Concerned Women for America” a very conservative evangelical Christian Woman’s group. The very voters that have been hesitant about Newt. This could influence the Christian Evangelical base of the party.

Only if you are a Kennedy.

Concerned Women of America. It is the polar opposite of the NAGs (National Association of Gals, more popularly known as NOW).

“I don’t think it can hurt.”

Only in propaganda terms form the left - in which I would include the GOP. Excerpt some unpopular or debatable point from Pastor LaHaye’s large body of work, blow it up large and argue that Newt is endorsed by “fringe religious extremists”. Pretty much what they do to any conservative getting an endorsement from a religious figure.

That said, the fact that LaHaye has been critical of Catholicism, and is endorsing a prominent Catholic convert, is profound to me. Both with regard to LaHaye, and to a prominent evangelical’s encouragement to other evangelicals to vote for Newt, despite the present denominational difference and the past marital infidelities.

The press, the left and the GOP will raise sand that Gingrich is supported by a ‘zealot’, but under the sand I think real movement will be made to Gingrich by evangelicals in the South. This is a nice icebreaker.
