I will certainly agree that the mess in the Balkans goes back at least to the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman emprires.
But if you start looking at that (and the aftermath of the Spanish-American War before that), you see the beginnings of our current foreign policy philosophy. And, one can certain argue that involving the U.S. in the Great War was wrongheaded. It did advance the cause of American influence in Europe, but I’m not certain that was such a good thing.
If you were a Democrat ward healer in Chicago you would still be overjoyed ~ or Cleveland even!
