There are now just two people standing between Mitt Romney and the GOP presidential nomination -- Newt Gingrich and Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire financier of Newt's super PAC.
All the other Republican candidates have faded, like Jon Huntsman, or they're about to fade, like Rick Santorum whose hot Iowa hand didn't last, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose decision to stay in the race is a South Carolina dream come true for Romney, and a real setback for southern politician Gingrich.
Gingrich, despite his many faults, is the only contender with enough stature to make this an ongoing race, especially with his friend's money keeping his hopes alive.
But for Newt to have any chance of stopping Romney, two things have to happen. First, everyone else needs to drop out (with the exception of Ron Paul, whose base is so independent that his appeal to voters in the remaining primaries, many of which have limited or no participation by independents, is diminishing before our eyes.) Second, Newt has to make the tough, personal decision that he's in it for the long haul.
Romney has run a strong race, but there remain many "not-Romney" voters in the GOP whose votes have been fruitlessly split among four or five other candidates. So long as Perry, Santorum and Gingrich are in the game, the game is over and Romney wins.

I agree. Great post. Newt has to make it clear that he’s in this through March. It makes no sense to drop out if he loses Florida.
His message is spot on. Romney is looking more and more like the phony he is, and the vast majority of us said he was.
Thank Heaven that this is happening now.
Newt has his flaws, but he is the right man at the right time. How people like Ann Coulter, George Will and the rest see differently is beyond me.
WE ALL KNOW NOW THAT ROMNEY HAS BOUGHT AND PAID FOR THE ENDORSEMENTS FROM OTHER POLITICIANS LIKE NIKKI HALEY...THIS WILL COME OUT.
Agreed. Looks like Newt is the only one that can prevent the Romnification of America.

Perhaps I could get back on the Gingrich wave which I haven’t caught since 1998. But I just don’t think voters are going to get behind him unless he starts belting ball after ball out of the park and in so doing creates momentum that carries to election day.
Newt is inconsistent, too much so. But when he connects, he’s powerful.
But alas...
Santorum is treated like a second class citizen all through this race and it is uncalled for. Santorum practically won Iowa and beat Newt in NH. He is the one that obviously voters want over Newt. Newt will gain supporters until his next off the wall comments and another need to apologize for saying it. I am so frustrated that people are not seeing Santorum as the best of the 3. He has never had any negative issues EVER. The guy is perfect and we need someone as a contrast to Obama. Can you imagine the Obama family portrait with a Newt portrait contrast on the media? It would be a disaster and if you don’t think that conservative values are going to be used this election than you are crazy. Newt’s marriage problems will be number one on Obama’s agenda. Bank on it. Do we REALLY want to risk that? If it is Santorum, it can’t happen and the Obama’s will be left with NOTHING to complain about the Santorum with. It will be virtually IMPOSSIBLE for Obama to find anything negative on Santorum and Santorum will win with at least 40 states because of his morals. Watch and see. Hopefully people will wake up and get behind this man for President. Oh that is right, they already are....just the media and some here are blinded by that fact. Go Santorum!!!!!
Of the current goup Santorum is my favorite but if he fades in S. Carolina he needs to get out of the race and take Perry with him.
I have a dream of both of those candidates along with the Palins and Herman Cain holding a press conference to announce their unified support for one Newt Gingrich.
In that presser they should let it be known that they know that Newt is NOT a consistent, trustworthy, always-got-your -back conservative but he’s close most of the time, he is with us a lot more than Romney is and Newt can beat Obama.
Sadly, this dream will not happen, Santorum and Perry will stay in the race until at least after Florida and basically gift-wrap the nomination for that sack of fetid manure, Mitt Romney. The only endorsements forthcoming will be after the nomination is all but sewn up and this will prove (yet again) that politicians are cowards.
If Perry and Santorum, neither of whom have a chance at victory, would pull out and throw their support to Gingrich, this race would be over.
Why would the guy with the most votes drop out and support the second worst vote getter in the race. Doesn’t make sense. Oh and Santorum has more delegates than the other two combined. You are making yourself look ridiculous. Santorum beat Newt and Perry TWICE!!!!!
Lest we forget 0bama for he has the greatest chance of keeping Romney oit as the better big government liberal.
I would ONLY want to see Newt debate O.
The prospect of debating Newt has O shaking in his shoes.
Mitt cannot and I think, will not SUCCESSFULLY debate O.
For the remaining Americans who are still undecided, the debate showdown is the ONLY thing that can save/ruin the O re election chances.
In his first Presidential campaign, O enjoyed a real advantage since he was the first minority candidate for that office he got a lot of leniency from voters and debate judges.
NOT so now!! Its a golden opportunity for our candidate to take O apart, in detail!!! (McCain couldnt or wouldnt, and thats history).
We need to have our best man in the Presidential debates this time! (It aint Mitt)
Oh noes...not again?
Santorum is a great guy, but he just doesn't generate the excitement needed to win (only a dull men wear a sweater vests...think about it).
Santorum is a great guy, but he just doesn’t generate the excitement needed to win
If that is the case why is he beating Newt and Perry in Iowa and NH. I think that if we went on results instead of emotion, you would see I am right.
I share your dream but it needs to happen before SC. The conservatives and freepers who keep saying “no one’s even voted yet” or “only 2 states have voted yet” “why should anyone get out of the race” “everyone should have a chance to vote for their preferred conservative” don’t have a clue how this process works. The time to choose a conservative alternative to Romney was in November, December at the latest. The fact that there are 5 candidates besides Romney still in the race almost guarantees that Romney will win with his 30% plurality - Stupid Party earns its name again.
If Newt, who has no chance at victory, would pull out...

You are of course, correct. What’s even more stupid? If Romney should beat Obama....as liberal as Romney is, no primary challenger will be allowed in 2016, guaranteed.
Citing his executive experience, successful economic record, thoroughly vetted background and solidly conservative credentials, Perry is the best man for the job. That so many voters can't see this is depressing. Perry remains the most conservative candidate in the race.
Sadly, I have to face the reality that 2012 will not be Perry's year. This, to me, says a lot more about my fellow "conservative" voters than it does about Rick Perry, a good man who deserved far more than his single digit polling has awarded him. Such as this is, Ari Fleischer is correct. Perry and Santorum need to drop out now before Romney runs away with the nomination.
Well, at this point, it seems Newt, warts and all, IS the only man trying to stop Romney, other than Perry, who sadly doesn’t have a chance.
All three basically have the same platform. However, Newt has the MOST commanding experience and a stalwart ability to articulate the positions. His private life is an OLD STORY. The only ones bringing it up are the social conservatives at this point!
However controversial, I like what Newt has done. He’s started the conversation about Romney — just like Cain did with taxes. It’s LEADERSHIP — and there’s no doubt Newt can lead. Not so sure about the other two, although they’re good guys.
And throw his support to whom?
to choose between Romney and Gingrich is to choose between my least two favorites.
