SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Redbox is being sued by a group of people with disabilities. The federal civil rights lawsuit says the giant movie rental service discriminates against blind people.
Many movies are dialogue driven and can be enjoyed by the visually impaired.
"You can enjoy large aspects of the narrative without needing to see the visual aspect of the movie at all," Disability Rights Advocates lawyer Michael Nunez said.
Friends and family can also help.
"If there's kind of a non-verbal part of the movie happening, you know, they'll describe what's happening to me," lawsuit plaintiff Lisamaria Martinez said.
But the kiosks of the video rental giant Redbox are difficult, if not impossible, to use for those who are blind and visually impaired. The lawsuit says Redbox needs to change the technology in their kiosks so the visually impaired can rent movies too.
"They have neither tactile buttons nor any other screen feature that would allow blind people to navigate their way through the kiosks," Martinez said.
Martinez and Nunez are almost totally blind. Martinez is suing Redbox. Nunez is a lawyer from Disability Rights Advocates, who's filed the civil rights lawsuit.
For Martinez and others with the same disability, Redbox's touch screen is just another flat surface.

UM...who drove them to the REDBOX??? Or...don’t they have a friend or relative they could get to get the movies...sheesh...this is ridiculous!
This is silly.
The person that took them to the store can get a film for them.
They’ve never heard of Netflix?
I guess this explains why brail is on ATM, still don’t see how they count the money.
Can’t see their point.
THIS is yet another example of why our country is going into the shitter! Garbage like this shouldn’t be allowed to even see the light of day in a courtroom, but judges allow it.
“UM...who drove them to the REDBOX???”
When I was in Car Rental, we had to have a process in place to rent cars to BLIND PEOPLE. In my state, blind people can’t get a drivers license.
But, we’d still have “Blind People” who worked for attorneys trying to rent cars, and be denied, so they could sue us.
The ADA is one of the BIGGEST scams going.
Enrolling in law school should be a capital offense.
But they sure can find a lawyer. Next you know they will be suing Apple for no tactile keys. I really feel sorry for the blind but this is pushing the envelope.
Until you, like, ya know, actually need one of those students.
It’s nonsense for them to clutter up the legal system with this sort of crap as long as there are worthier causes.
Thats easy,
$100 bills feel newer and less folded with a hint of leather
$50 bills have multiple fold grooves with a hint of pot and channel
$20 bills are usually triple folded and smell of Dennys, Mcdonalds, and booze
$10s feel slightly crinkled and smell like the mall
$5s are flimsy, worn, and smell of pencils, erasers, and cafeteria food
$1s are infamous for feeling greasy and smelling of underwear,
and when licked can cause hallucinations and vomiting
Oh, and $3 bills talk funny.
What next, Coke machines owners being sued?
I’m not hiring one that goes after video companies for not kowtowing to the blind. There comes a time when ANY trade overreaches. I remember a time when lawyers were supposedly so honorable they were prevented from advertising. Now all I see on the tube are amateurish, mawkish, lawyer advertisements. The profession has jumped a seaful of sharks.
Isn’t this like deaf people suing radio stations?
That is funny!!!! LOL
Yup and Blind people suing GM for not having operator friendly cars.
