Gingrich returned to the stump Thursday with a heavy dose of populism and defended himself against charges of being anti-capitalist and anti-free enterprise.
"I think when you have crony capitalism of politicians taking care of their friends, that's not free enterprise, that's just backdoor socialism in which the rich get all the money and the rest of us get left, get left with all the debt," Gingrich told an audience of senior citizens gathered at the state fair grounds for a convention.
Gingrich said he's been "amazed" by the intensity of critics who he said are attacking him for questioning the bailout of big banks. He suggested the bailouts were tied to corruption at the Federal Reserve and the Treasury.
"American people have a right to know what has been happening to their economy, and they have a right to know where all the money went, they deserve an audit on the Federal Reserve, and the Treasury, to find out where the money went, to find out who got the money and why they got the money," said Gingrich to wide applause.
But it's not Mr. Gingrich's questions about bank bailouts that are raising eyebrows among prominent conservative voices, it's his questions about Mitt Romney's record at Bain Capital. And while Gingrich would later tell reporters he was referring specifically to the bailouts of AIG and Goldman Sachs when he criticized "back door socialism," the candidate made a point to tell seniors that it wasn't just financial institutions that need to be more transparent but also presidential candidates as well.

Was it capitalism for the aforementioned to bailout banks in the face of 75% of Americans who said that capitalism commands that the banks should fail.
Capitalism when Bush spent more on government programs that any other president in history?
Capitalism when Fed gave free money to global conglomerates so that these institutions can play the carry trade- and make RISK FREE BILLIONS at the expense of Americans who tthen suffered inflation, higher energy costs, higher food costs, the devaluation of the dollar- and the ruination of the equity in their homes?
Capitalism when those same institutions, profiting from the free money, give unconscionable bonuses to their executives? What are you people defending?????
The Romneys/McCains/Bushs dont give a damn about you they dont care if you live under socialism, communism or a dictatorship as long as they are rich and in power. They chant Free Markets yeh, free for them!
What everyone should now understand is that we are being played by a Big Lie- propaganda that would have you believe that you have freedom and liberty and can live the American Dream under Republicans when in fact, we are nothing but slaves to the oligarchy that controls the country. And worse, those in the commentariat who we thought were on our side, are nothing more then tools of the Establishment at the ready to intimidate any who would rise up in protest.
None of them will tolerate a candidate who represents constitutional American Bush 1 was quoted as sayinng something like- if the people actually knew what we were doing, they would lynch us from the nearest tree. And so it is.
I admire what Newt is trying to do here- he's picking up the Palin/TeaParty message. Newt, an insider, is now a whistleblower. They HATE him- and for that very reason, I support him.
And, imo, Sarah should step in quickly- If not, all that she built will be for naught, now and in the future.
Newt, shut mouth before you make things even worse.
You may be interested in this: it is what has me concerned about Romney.
No, you shut yours.
Yes well Newt and Perry are finding out what happens when you let sunlight hit VAMPIRES. All H breaks loose.
One should remember that the fictional Dickens character, Ebeneezer Scrooge, also operated wholly within the law.
Just because its legal does not mean its good.
The golden rule of Do unto others as you would have them do unto you seems to find little favor among some business people. It is replaced in their hearts by Business is Business!
Socialism is evil, capitalism is good. I firmly believe this.
not back door at all, they told us over 50 years ago what they were going to do and exactly how they were going to do it
Do you even understand what he is talking about, here:
“American people have a right to know what has been happening to their economy, and they have a right to know where all the money went, they deserve an audit on the Federal Reserve, and the Treasury, to find out where the money went, to find out who got the money and why they got the money,..”
Big banks, like Goldman Sachs, are stealing.
Taking $$$$$ from FM/FM is crony capitalism at its worst.
VinL, I agree with you. I admire Newt too for standing up and taking the hits. He is amazing when he stays on message like this. I know not everyone likes Newt though he has my respect since there is no one else trying to stop Romney/i.e. the same old system Bush/Rove legacy/allowing corruption to be protected. I wish he would sign a pledge for bringing up term limits and reforming the current tax code. I am praying for Newt.
More like looting and pillaging. And that’s a fact.
Newt keep talking about the issues. You can be direct, polite without being uptight or a girly man.
What kind of capitalism involves a failed GSE paying $1.6 million to hire a "historian."
This election is going to go down in history as a huge missed opportunity. We might as well plan for another $7 billion added to the debt.
Please, nobody tell Obama what comes after a "trillion."
Interesting how we see how many closet Romney supporters were waiting in the shadows onthe Board. Reminds me how the GOP operatives came outof the wooodwrok to saboutage Miller, O’Donnell and Angle.
Newt admitted on tape yesterday that this gambit of attacking Mittens was ill advised, then ten minutes later, says he said no such thing. It appears that even Newt is upset with the way he is on a bizarre, anti Capitalism tear. It just depends on what time of day you ask him.
SOMEONE has to take it to them. This country cannot survive doing business as usual. The truth is ucking fugly. Better face it. Our treasury has been looted. There is nothing left. Nothing.
Wrong. Newt has been staying very on point about this.
I am shocked but not surprised that the Repubs in congress had so little to say about this.
We have stimulus and bail-out moneys gone who-knows-where, and we have the Fed sending trillions to bail out Euro banks and no one aside from Paul and Beck have had much to say about it.
Fannie Mae collapsed with its inner circle pocketing multimillion dollar bonuses and again, no one in congress has had much to say about it.
Trillions have been flushed away. No one went to jail, in fact no one said boo.
So, thank you Newt. Late to the party, but better late than not at all.
Taking $$$$$ from FM/FM is crony capitalism at its worst.
No, that is not right. He was paid as an adviser. Those books are open to review. Mitt’s book records are in secret. Mitt bought up some companies and and as soon as the stocks increase, he dumps them, making tons of profits..looks fishy. Big difference. When it is ok to not ask questions, about a candidate’s business practices.
