SAN ANTONIO -- A man is dead and two more are in the hospital following a home invasion that turned into a gunfight early Wednesday morning at 8219 Quail Creek, police say.
The homeowner told police he heard a knock at the door and then some commotion around the garage just before 5:00 a.m. Thinking it was suspicious, the man got his shotgun and went to see what was going on.
Police said the man met two suspects, armed with a AR-15 assault rifle, in the kitchen and began shooting.
One of the suspects was fatally shot, police said, while the other ran out of the house after being shot in the chest. He ran to a get away vehicle where a woman described as his girlfriend drove him to nearby Northeast Baptist Hospital.
The 24-year-old surviving suspect was later taken by medical helicopter to San Antonio Military Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Officers said the homeowner took a bullet in the face, which exited through his cheek. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in stable but serious condition.
Investigators have not been able to determine why the men targeted the Quail Creek residence. They did say if the remaining suspect survives he will likely face charges of burglary and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
His alleged girlfriend and the getaway vehicle were taken into police custody. She could face criminal charges too, police said.
The alleged victim, 28, is not expected to face criminal charges under the Texas Castle Doctrine which allows a homeowner to use deadly force to protect their property. However, the results still have to be submitted to the Bexar County District Attorney's office and a grand jury for review.
Another happy ending.
Good shooting citizen. Get well soon. Your shotgun saved your life.
Why do taxpayers have to foot the bill to fly this criminal to a military hospital?
The homeowner needs a better gun.
Why not charge him with felony murder?
The perps were after something in particular.
Armed home invasions seldom include an AR-15.
I'll bet they had a criminal record as well and were not allowed to own firearms of any kind, much less an AR-15 assault rifle.
Didn't our glorious federal government pass laws to protect us from this sort of thing? All we need is more restrictions on law abiding citizens to persuade criminals to obey the law.
By golly, that's it! They had to be armed with an AR-15 assault rifle because the lack of restrictions on what homeowners can be armed with made them feel threatened. Just like our ownership of nuclear weapon stockpiles makes poor misunderstood tiny countries like North Korea, Iran and Venezuela feel compelled to develop this awful weapons for their own self defense. < / sarcasm >
Agreed. The weaponry, the planning—it seems to be a bit more in-depth than a random assault.
If the thugs were in Oklahoma, both the survivor and the girlfriend would be charged with murder 1.
Nope.
A shotgun is the ultimate gun for this sort of job. Plus, he bagged them both in spite of being shot in the face with a .223/5.56
Perp number 2 barely survived the encounter.
If he had any other weapon in this encounter he most likely would be dead.
Yay for the homeowner!!
Unfortunately, there has been a sharp increase in burglaries around Central Texas lately.
I double check that my shotgun is loaded and ready every day ;)
Not available in Texas.
Well, except for the getting shot in the face part.
Still, the bad guys were well-armed. An AR-15 is nothing to scoff about. Proves once again that there's nothing better to have in a close-quarters situation than a shotgun.
By calling these guns assault weapons you are playing the lefts game.
He doesn’t need a better gun, just heavier loads!
Suspects? Perhaps 'perpetrators' is harder to spell.
Not to come to the defense of the robber but I’m willing to bet he had that AR all blinged out with extra rails, lights, collapsible stock and etc.
I don’t want to get into an AR argument about its caliber, its usefullness and such.
But this sole event shows that those willing to wish harm upon others have equal access to guns, forums and accessories, just something to think about.
My home defense shothun was made in 1933, its a fully functional, slightly modernized shortened barrel Remington Model 11, very popular prison riot gun the automatic 12 gauge, yes its automatic and I have it set up to cycle VERY fast.
Its no Saiga fer sure but its a classic.
Sabots......
Cuts em in half....
I really don’t like any gun being called an assault weapon. That somehow gives the impression that one gun is an “assault” weapon, and another gun isn’t.
To my way of thinking, any object that is used to assault someone is an “assault weapon”. That could be a tire iron, a fence post—or even a fist.
A gun is a gun is a gun. They can all be used as an assault weapons.
