While Newt Gingrich campaign staffers are calling such talk premature, there are indications that should the former House Speaker bow out of the GOP race, he would throw his support behind rising Rick Santorum in a last-ditch effort to stop frontrunner Mitt Romney.
Multiple South Carolina sources affiliated with Santorum's campaign said Gingrich's campaign has contacted Santorum's campaign to discuss endorsing the former Pennsylvania senator should he drop out.
One source, speaking to Patch on the condition they not be identified, paraphrased Gingrich's stance as delivered by high level campaign staff this way: "If it can't be me, I want it to be Rick Santorum.""
Gingrich is looking at finishing as low as fifth place in New Hampshire and is currently polling at under 20 percent (good for third place) in South Carolina, according to rolling averages from Real Clear Politics.
Still, high-ranking officials within Santorum's South Carolina campaign don't foresee Gingrich stalling out before the primaries in the Palmetto State, where he once commanded an imposing lead in the polls.

He did insult Palin, but I think she blew it off, pretty much.
You could not be more right.
Here, in DE, we saw this played out first hand with how the State and national GOP sabotaged Christine O'Donnell.
If they couldn't have their boy Mike Castle, they trashed the candidate chosen by the people, and willingly gave the Dems a Senate seat.
After Castle lost his primary to Christine, Obama and Biden phoned him to give him solace. That's right, the two top Dems paid a call to a GOP candidate. And that a-hole Castle couldn't pick up the phone to congratulate Christine on her win and would not support her run after he lost.
And Karl Tokyo Rove was in the middle of all of it.
Thanks.
Funny thing is, even as a hard-core Palin supporter, in retrospect Santorum’s original comment which seems to have set off the media-augmented kerfuffel (your link is after all Polibtico) seems to have been spot on.
Palin may have deserved some criticism, then and now.
She folded. What her reasons were, is known only to her.
Santorum ran.
I’m going with Santorum on this one.
Sorry Palin.
I wasn’t criticizing either one-—after all, I may end up voting for Santorum. Just another interesting episode in this crazy election season that might be a factor in who Sarah ends up supporting.
I think Palin understood that Santorum was coming from a Catholic perspective, though that perspective wasn’t shared by her.
“Gingrich Could Endorse Santorum”
Bingo!
Newt’s negatives are now sky high among republicans and he has no chance of winning the nomination.
He needs to bow out and endorse a pro-capitalist candidate like Santorum.
Newt can still spend his PAC money running ads. But if he stays in the race pulling 10% of the vote he might as well just endorse Romney. Newt needs to do the right thing. He is beginning to sound dangerously close to Hugo Chavez and that’s not going to win him any friends in a republican primary. And it could very well destroy his legacy.
I doubt it....Palin is strongly in Santorum’s camp.
I met Newt yesterday, and he seemed tired. It really wouldn’t surprise me.
“Santorum is the one who is headed for an exit.”
He should. Gingrich is going to win SC, but Santorum is too self-serving to pull out.

.....Nice try. I think they’re all tired.
Exactly. SC Sources [straight from the Romney campaign hmmm?] Could [now there's a classic weasel word, anyone could do anything, doesn't mean they will] Endorse Santorum.
I smell Romney. I think Newt's speech will say he'll align with Santorum if Rick beats him in South Carolina.
The Catholic perspective is not that wives stay home, barefoot and pregnant...BS./
...forget about it!
ain't gonna play here in SC FRiend.
Sounds to me like Newt’s playing in the big leagues as he does so well....this is a Newt play ....and you can bet in New’ts favor no matter what way it’s presented....
Go Newt Go!!!!!!!!!!
Newt understands what is at stake if Romney gets the nomination.
This is Santorum Young College Republican Psyops....which works on drunk college kids.
Gingrich is just behind Romney in SC.
Santorum got zero bounce from Iowa...
Gingrich is now spending money in SC, he’ll close the 4-5% gap with Romney and win SC.
Guaranteed.
I love Newt and I love the idea of him going after Mittens. However, I think he is very wrong in choosing his line of attack on Mittens. I expect Obama and the Rats to attack Mittens with the whole Bain Capital thing, but not a fellow Republican. He and Perry have given legitimacy to this line of attack and they have to stop it now!
If Newt needs ammo to attack Mittens with, read all the posts on here bashing him. Most of us do it with legitimate gripes and not some crap made up about how he fires people and made money off them. Mittens has serious flaws, but working for Bain Capital is not one of them.
