NOT true. You do NOT need a Kindle reader to read Kindle books. Anyone can download a Kindle app FREE to their computer and read any of the Kindle books from there. I've done it many times. Kindle even has an app for iPhone/iPad.

Kindle apps can be had for Android, Blackberry, iOS, OSX, and Windows. I’m a bit surprised they don’t have one for linux.
