Internet bills could stifle free speech, diversity of opinion

We were all taught in civics and government classes that we could only achieve enlightenment through the free, open and dispassionate exchange of ideas and opinions. By this practice, truth will eventually win out over falsehood, we learned.

Extending this maxim to freedom of the press, American essayist E.B. White said it best: "The press in our free country is reliable and useful not because of its good character but because of its great diversity. As long as there are many owners, each pursuing his own brand of truth, we the people have the opportunity to arrive at the truth and dwell in the light."

There are currently two bills in Congress -- one on the Senate side and one in the House -- that would curtail these rights. Anything that limits our freedoms of speech and press must necessarily be examined with a hypercritical eye and a healthy dose of skepticism...

I would add that the consequences may not be all that unintended.

And we also have this story...

Homeland Security monitors journalists

All the things the left claimed that GWB did or was doing (and was never true) are now coming to pass with BHO.

Is there really any doubt that the decline of America started already? This is it, folks. We are literally looking down the barrel of a loaded cannon with the fuse just inches away from the powder.

The worst point of abuse: most websites allow some form of public visitor posting (”comments”), whereby agent provocateurs could with ease post an offending link (or an innocent link, passing moderation, then link target edited to offend), then sic the authorities thereon for shutdown.

A freedom secured by the individual, is a power denied to the state. Our First Amendment freedoms are our most cherished, and the most fundamental rights we possess. It has been said that the purpose of the Second Amendment is to secure those rights contained in the First. This cannot stand.

Keep watch on these two bills. They could have serious unintended consequences.

There is nothing unintended about it. It's about control. The media companies want 100% control over how you view their media, and the government can use this control to stifle discussion they don't like. Both sides are working together on this.

If this legislation gets through, and Obama signs it, and HE WILL, you can expect Free Republic to be one of the first sites to be targeted.
