Valerie Jarrett 'Dedicated Her Life' to the Obamas; Plus, More Details from Jodi Kantor's New Book
Chicago Mag ^ | January 9, 2012 | Carol Felsenthal

Posted on 01/09/2012 2:28:14 PM PST by maggief

Last week, I posted a Q&A with Jodi Kantor, author of The Obamas, a new book about the First Couple. In the interview, which was a continuation of the edited transcript that ran in the January issue of Chicago, the New York Times reporter told me about her encounters with the First Family and what Laura Bush said to Michelle Obama during her tour of the White House. Below is the final part of the conversation, in which Kantor discusses key Chicago figures such as Valerie Jarrett and Desirée Rogers, Barack's time at Columbia University, and Michelle's secret trips to Petco and Target.

CF: You were an undergraduate at Columbia University, as was the president. Do you ever compare notes?
JK:
No. His undergraduate time at Columbia remains one of the great mysteries of his biography. Only a handful of people from Columbia remember him, and, those who do, remember him faintly. His time at Columbia seems to have been very monastic. This comes back to something that is a real theme in the book, which is that he’s a fairly solitary figure…. He generally has dinner with his family at 6:30. After dinner, he spends a little bit of time with his family, but then he works. He goes into the Treaty Room, which is his private office at the White House. It’s a real working office. The Oval Office is a little like a stage set. The Treaty Room has a computer and a printer, and it has a TV where he’ll put the basketball game on in the background. He makes a lot of really important presidential decisions there. It’s the opposite of Bill Clinton, who would pick up the phone at one in the morning and call somebody.

The Oval Office is a little like a stage set. I knew it. Isn't everything on record in the Oval as well?

BHO,Jr., aka Barry Soetoro, started his Columbia career at the Columbia School of General Studies, which is Columbia's "walk-in" operation. Ya pays your money, ya takes the course(s) you want.

If you can get the University to accept your previous work, and you jump through a few prescribed academic hoops, you get a real degree from Columbia College, which he most certainly did NOT attend, but which does issue degrees to those General Studies students who complete the courses.

Most of the General Studies courses are more or less pure academic hosshiite, but a General Studies student is free to apply to, and MAY be admitted to any course in the university catalog for which the student qualifies.

Since the records are sealed, we'll never know what Obama took, or how he did. Cross-indexing the travel record, the residence record, etc., it actually turns out that Obama wasn't in town all that much, so the mystery deepens.

The real question, IMHO, is "Did he know Bill Ayers during their mutual period of residence within blocks of each other in NYC, during which period Ayers was masterminding bomb-building and armored car robberies?"

Reggie Love walked into his windowless office late last week and surveyed the confines. It wasn’t exactly an ideal place to work, especially for someone standing 6 feet, 5 inches. A burgundy couch, desk and cabinet took up much of the floor, leaving little room to maneuver.

“The space is small,” Love said. “But the real estate is valuable.”

Nearly every day, Love takes a right turn out of his office, walks a few steps and opens a door to the most famous office in the world: the Oval Office. Whatever President Obama happens to need once inside, from a copy of a speech to a newspaper, Love gets for him. As the president’s personal assistant – a job known as a body man – Love also keeps him on schedule, often deciding who gets the president’s ear.

No surprise there. “Iranian of the Day” in cahoots with spooky-dude:

No, the real question is, during all his private time, his solitary time, his “vacation” time, his “golf” time, what is he really doing?

Is he in touch with Ayers, or Dohrn? What about Klonsky?

Who is this guy, and what does he really do?

I wouldn't be surprised at all if more assinine decisions from the WH were actually hers instead of Zippy's. Blago blocked her from getting Zippy's senate seat, the Ubamas owe her a lot.

RE: #14, ghetto trash if I've ever seen it.

While I wasn't the biggest fan of Bush 43, the difference in respect for WH and other tradition is just stunning.

Their two daughters are strikingly different in look. The oldest has the lanky awkwardness of her mother, while the younger, speaking of Valerie Jarrett, kind of looks like her, as Jarrett is short and rounded. Obviously, the younger hasn’t reached her growth spurts yet, I’m sure.
