MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) A Las Vegas billionaire has contributed $5 million to an independent group backing Newt Gingrich, breathing new life into the former House Speaker's struggling campaign for the GOP presidential nomination and casting renewed attention on the role of such groups in the 2012 contest.
A person familiar with the development said Sheldon Adelson, a casino mogul and longtime donor to Republican candidates, made the contribution Friday to Winning Our Future, a super PAC run by Gingrich allies. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity and was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Adelson is expected to contribute as much or more to the candidate who eventually wins the Republican nomination, be it Gingrich or one of his rivals.

From what I can gather, none of those delegates are bound to anyone. Iowa still has to hold a state convention later to officially assign delegates.
So I don’t see why that cant happen.
There are some changes in the GOP rules (as I understand it) here is what I found out...This is in regards to new GOP rules:

Another take is....
There is the distinction between Superdelegates and regular ones
“super delegates “
-> They can vote for whomever they want. Any super delegates who pledged their vote to someone who’s dropped out can vote for another candidate of their chosing.
REGULAR delegates
If the candidate they’re supposed to vote for drops out their option then depend on the state. Some states redistribute any delegates won by candidates who have dropped out to candidates who are still in the race. Others may release the delegates of any obligation.
The candidates the delegates are voting for also have a say in what is happening.
Sheldon Adelson is a great American.
No delegates were bound to anyone by the Iowa caucus straw vote. ‘News’ sites indicating otherwise don’t know what they’re talking about.
By the time Iowa chooses delegates in mid-June, the candidate will probably be known. If not, the Iowa delegation will be disproportionately in favor of Romney, who was the pick of most party regulars, who knew how to stick around and get selected to the next level.
Paul supporters and other neophytes tended to leave after the straw vote, leaving party regulars (mostly RINOs) in charge.
Better than the Democrat’s superdelegates: the aristocracy.
Ron Paul is in the bed w/Mitt. Notice he never mentioned Mitt’s LACK OF MILITARY service. Why didn’t he attack romneycare when he was trying to paint santorum as not conservative. RP is taking up for MB - attacking Mitt’s opponent and not Mitt.
Woo Hoo. Great news for heading down to SC and FL.
Does anyone have a good uncut link to the debate from night? One without the ABC editing and spinning!
There should not be any Super-delegates and delegates should be bound to vote for the winner of their state on the first ballot at the convention.
"I know that Barack Obama is prepared for the racist mud that someone like Adelson is prepared to fling at him.
But $200-million worth of it still scares the hell out me."
Sounds like he "scares the hell" out of the Socialist in America.
It's your money Shel; do as you damn well please.
We know Soros will.
Correction:
It is just too dangerous to have someone with this power and wealth involved in the political process Conservative Agenda.
Gingrich will go down easy; What a fool believes.
There are those of us, by the tens of millions, who pay absolutely no attention to either the media or the polls. Then there are the lemmings
Newton will get the nomination and irrevocably remove the stench from the White House carrying both Chambers of Congress to a Landslide Victory.
Wasn’t this claim floated a month ago and denied? Does it matter?
Adelson sound like my kind of guy! I guess I don’t understand the left’s harangue against rich people. Money can do good if placed in the right spots!
Excellent news. Gingrich needs the financial support and this is a critical moment to be defined as the “non-Romney” candidate. South Carolina is coming . . .
u just git better w/age
I think a kinder, gentler way would be for Sarah Palin to endorse someone. I don’t understand why she hasn’t. It’s the quickest path to get conservatives to rally behind one non-Romney alternative, IMO.
