Maybe because he did this, for starters...
Newt insisted on moving the Contract With America intact. He abolished committees and denied old bulls chairmanships. He insisted on using the majority to win conservative victories such as balancing budgets, achieving welfare reform and producing 11 million new jobs with tax cuts that spurred economic growth. He made some people unhappy when he pursued legislation that could win instead of pet bills that would have divided Republicans rather than uniting them.
And he negotiated with a Democratic president to get the conservative legislation being passed signed into law. Some Republicans were left unhappy in the wake of all of that activity some of them are still complaining today.

Newt blew it for me when he went on that fraudulent AGW tour with Nazi Pelosi.
Maybe you could read this, and watch this, where Newt testifies before Congress against c&t the same day Al Gore testified for it:

Sorry, Newt has played the reaching-across-the-aisle game too long.
He won a majority for the GOP in 94 with his Contract with America and then promptly tore that contract to pieces.
He was able to push through a conservative agenda and aid the economy only because Clinton had lost majorities and had several scandals that compromised his ability to rule from the hard left.
Newt’s support of AGW (and all the socialist governmental control that it entails) combined with his support of amnesty for criminals in our country puts him in the Romney camp of Democrat-lite.
If you want to settle for the lesser of two evils, you are free to do so. I have for the past two decades. I will not do so again.
The rinos can’t deny Gingrich’s solid record of conservative accomplishment. Which of the other candidates have lowered taxes, reformed welfare, created jobs in the private sector, and balanced the federal budget, all while fighting a hostile press and a Democrat White House?
Newt supported the biggest expansion of the entitlement program, the Medicare prescription Drug Program, Demint did not.
Newt supported the concept of manmade global warning and the need for the government to take urgent action, Demint does not.
Great points, well said. Sure, he has faults as they ALL do - but these accomplishments are huge - he’s proven worthy of fighting, and defeating, the giants.
You know, you keep referring to how Newt acted in the 90s when referring to the role of government and such. If you were that focused on other candidates, using only a small slice of their time to judge their worth, I am sure there is a slice of Romney’s life you could use to justify a vote for him. Gingrich’s more recent actions, even in the last year, disqualify him for me.
