KEENE, N.H. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum called Friday for immediate cuts to Social Security benefits, risking the wrath of older voters and countless others who balk at changes to the entitlement program.
"We can't wait 10 years," even though "everybody wants to," Santorum told a crowd while campaigning in New Hampshire and looking to set himself apart from his Republican rivals four days before the New Hampshire primary.
Most of his opponents have advocated phasing in a reduction and say immediate cuts would be too big a shock to current and soon-to-be retirees.

Not to sound like the Commissar in Doctor Zhivago, but these McMansions could easily hold two generations of families in their houses.
I am not that pessimistic. Although I can understand why someone who has such a rigid view of things and has no solutions would be.
I never said government would have solutions, if you are looking to the government for “solutions” well then you’re looking in the wrong place.
Are you suggesting that seniors should squat in rich people’s homes? There was a thread last night about using a law in Texas to take over abandoned homes for next to nothing.
I meant extended families living together, not strangers.
I asked you for a solution and you admitted you didn’t have one. I didn’t say a thing about the government.
What about the seniors who live in little shotgun shacks or apts?
I don’t have a solution, I would love to do away with foreign aid and kick every single illegal out of the country, if I had a magic wand I would make those things happen. But we all know that will never happen with this bunch in Washington. So you know, let’s just do nothing, and keep the status quo, there you go, that’s my solution.
You started that post with a solution but then you decided to forget it and wring your hands instead. I can’t take that kind of pessimism. Why not offer what you proposed as the first step instead of just giving up in despair?
We got so many things backwards in our society that I don’t even know where to begin.
I met more happy people (who lived as families) in the third world. By our standards, they were poor beyond imagination and their life was incredibly hard. Everyone had to work to provide the necessities that we take for granted.
I have come to realize that they were far richer than most of us.
It is heartbreaking that so many assume that elderly people will die in the streets without social security. How could a nation so wealthy be so poor in spirit?
I mean W couldn’t even take the first few baby steps to privatizing SS without everybody getting up over arms about it.
Looks like you and I are fighting a losing battle, even here on FR.
So, you have a solution to how seniors with no family will make it if their SS is cut below subsistence levels? Great! Let’s hear it.
The Dems killed that. I was all for it.
You can’t win a battle if you have no battle plan other than “let them eat cake.”
Because this isn't the same country that it was even during Reagan's time. Reagan couldn't get elected today, sad to say, not with today's demographics.
Pubbies gave them plenty of help.
I have a McMansion and it was bought with the certainty that my parents and in-laws would likely live in it one day. My kids wish my parents or in-laws would move in now. Our family and friends know they have a place to come if they fall on hard times.
Life is a circle and just as my parents loved me enough to bring me into the world, change my diaper, and feed and cloth me, I love them enough to do the same for them in their latter years out of love. That is family.
It works great in other cultures and provides plenty of joy to grandparents and grandchildren alike.
We got it all wrong here!
I wouldn’t call my mother’s house a McMansion, it’s about 2,000 sq ft of living space, but it’s enough for the two of us. As long as we can keep it. Then again if we had to sell it that could be a problem too at the current time.
