I think Ron Paul is willing to cut a deal. It’s just that none of the other candidates seem to be interested. Very bad move on their part.

(Full disclosure: I’m a Ron Paul supporter. Not a particularly fervent one, but a supporter nonetheless)

What kind of deal do you envision that might work?

You’re dealing with ideologues, so the deal has to adopt some of their ideas. If I were say Rick Santorum, I’d be talking about why a return to the gold standard might not be so bad of an idea. And I’d be doing that by, oh, Monday.

The key things that the Paul camp want as differentiated from the other candidates are not all that horrible in my view. In addition to agreeing to sound money, I’d be talking about serious Fed reform, how an Austrian school economist would be the next Fed chair and how I wouldn’t go to war without a formal declaration of war.

Other issues I don’t think are as important to the Paul camp. Contrary to the oft quoted canard, drug legalization isn’t the unifying issue. Start by offering 50% of a loaf, and they’ll be listening real hard.
