The thing is, Nazi Germany is not the only nation in the world that has this defense authorization type policy. True, not many other nations have it set in stone, but among those that do include Israel and India-both states with long and brutal histories of dealing with jihadist terror. It would only be a good analogy if defense authorization was the only thing Hitler initiated as he rose to power; it wasnt. Hitler took over from a govt that was a complete wreck to begin with, Germany at the time was not a nation with a govt and Constitution and Legislation that for 200+ years that guaranteed its citizens liberty and opportunities for success. Germany was a failed state before Hitler’;s rise to power. And as for this NDAA, well I have already argued this quite extensively, to say the least, but the bill is essentially saying that Congress agrees with Obama AND Ex President Bush regarding who, including US citizens, can be detained under the AUMF; Obama did not make fundamental changes to Bush’s policy in that area. If this is a Nazi bill, then we’ve been going the route of Nazi Germany since right after 9/11. Possibly earlier, since Presidents have numerous times claimed the right to detain Americans without trail under given conditions. We need to, in addition to be armed, be genuinely educated about our laws and how they can be applied, and have historically been applied, to Americans. Right now it doesnt seem like we can tell when the govt is approaching tyranny or just doing its job.

I am sure that’s true, but Congress made this bill and put in the part about detention without trial and wrote vague language about “substantially supporting” and “associated forces”. And I see no reason at all to believe that if this bill, which needs to be signed every year to provide funding and salaries for our troops, just so everyone is clear on that, was sent veto-proof to Bush’s desk that he would refuse to sign it.

And for other facts: [Allen] West, along with Marco Rubio, explicitly stated their support for NDAA 2012, and I doubt it is because Obama brainwashed them into it. Would they have done so if they thought there was a real change that, as political opponents of Obama, they could be disappeared ? My hope is that they thought it through and are prepared to ensure there is zero chance of that happening.

And also, if the military is gutted, how could he use it to places huge masses of Americans into camps ? Dictators who want power typically expand the military and increase military budget. To be sure, that doesnt exlude the possibility that he thinks he can issue orders to American people and they will go along without thinking it through, without even having to order any armed men to coerce them.

A list of sites the Department of Homeland of Security wants to monitor:

http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/privacy/privacy_pia_ops_publiclyavailablesocialmedia_update.pdf

Interestingly enough, FR is not anywhere on there, even though I am sure there are at least several sites there that get less viewership than this one are on there. Seems like this site is considered impotent to at least some parts of govt for now, good news bad news thing I guess ?

He is the mask they wear; it’s them we hear. This is in reference to a line in “The Phantom Of The Opera”. It’s where the girl/Phantom sing: “I am the mask you wear; it’s me they hear!”. I somehow thought of this line, and applied it to Obama and his enablers/puppetmasters!

Do those refer to the pogroms that happened at the end of Ancinet Rome ? If so, than I wonder about how the analogy holds. Ancient Rome was not a truly democratic Republic the way the US is. They didnt have established balances of power and representation for people like we do.

Yes, I know what you mean, now they are clobbering Rubio on another thread. Sometimes I think most FReepers are DNC operatives here on FR.

late republic, 1st century bc. no, the entire analogy is never complete (no historical analogy can be), but the underlying political scene was, to my eye, not dissimilar. ‘it cannot happen here’ is something germans most certainly would have said in 1920.

Liquidating the opposition isn’t a new concept, and the NDAA is a nice building block on doing so legally. it is also good for going after high-wealth targets (sulla did this, iirc), just for the purpose of confiscating their wealth.

Yes, the Tea Party may fade away. I’d prefer they hide in the grass though, so they can bite any unwary liberal that strays too far from the path of righteousness. :-)

Justsaynomore posted a message from a Cain campaign worker that death threats against Cain’s grandchildren had been received, more than once IIRC. That’s why he dropped out. Death threats.

If there is hope, it lies in the proles.

If there were any hope, it must lie with the proles.

IF THERE IS HOPE, IT LIES IN THE PROLES.
