JEFFERSON COUNTY - A massive collision investigators say may involve as many as 40 vehicles and has injured more than a dozen people on Highway 73 and has prompted a response from at least 15 ambulances.
Investigators say fog and a marsh fire reduced visibility in the area.
The collision on Highway 73, about 4 miles west of the Taylor Bayou Bridge, took place early Thursday morning, according to Jefferson County deputies and Chief Charlles Sonnier of the Labelle-Fannett VFD.
He told KFDM News at least a dozen cars and a tanker truck collided. Several vehicles are on fire.

Unless visibility is such that you can’t see the car, when it’s four seconds in front of you, it’s not do to low visibility.
It’s due to people not practicing safe driving.

Over 200 cars on the side of the road. No idea how many are involved.

I grew up in Beaumont. That fog can roll in very fast down there and sock you in. I don’t know if much has changed today, but there were roads in some places that had no shoulders to speak of-—just swamps on both sides..

I don’t know the road conditions, outside my province, but bad driving habits universal.
Too many drivers will ride another’s tailgate as if allowing safe space would delay their trip to work by thirty seconds.
Even under the best of circumstances, most drivers couldn’t stop suddenly.

I worked in Beaumont for about 8 months in the early '90s.
Man that fog could roll in fast and thick.
I liked Beaumont. And I was surprised that I did.
Lots of good eating around the town.

It was a great place to grow up. I lived the first 18 yrs of my life there. (I’ve still got webs between my toes—LOL!)

That section of 73 was built up several years ago. It used to be a two lane road and now it's 4 lane with shoulders with a grass divider.
That close to the bayou usually means early morning fog, whether the marsh is burning or not.
Mark my words, there will be a hue and cry against the farmers for this. Lots of "outsiders" have moved into the area and they're perturbed that their air is being polluted by farmers.

State 73..between Port Arthur and Winnie...made that drive a many a time...takes you right by
Big Hill .. we used to measure fog down there by the "line"...one line fog, 2 line fog, etc...how many of the painted white lines you could see ahead... SE Texas and south Louisiana, IMHO, is where they invented fog..

If you remember SH 73 as a two lane road it’s 4 lanes now all the way to Winnie.

I moved away a long time ago, and no longer have family there, but I go back once in a while. There used to be a lot of rice farming around, and I just supposed there still once.
It wasn’t until I left the area for the first time that I learned that you can’t see air—LOL! Chemical plants and oil refineries in one direction, and the Evadale paper mill in the other. All that smelled like money to us! Smog was a fact of life.

Not nearly as many rice farmers as there used to be though they still conduct the burns. Marsh grass is a pain.
Great rabbit hunting years ago though I imagine that the feral hogs have taken their toll as of late.

You would have made a killing around here for the last few years.
Opportunity is waning now that the new units at 3 different refineries are almost finished.
