Thursday, January 19, 2012, is the 205th birthday of General Robert E. Lee, whose memory is still dear in the hearts of people everywhere.

In many areas of the country there was a great degree of lawlessness, and for your family I am sorry. Mine had our entire property stolen-everything; the stock, food stores, seed grain, hams, furnishings, silver, crystal and the home burned to the ground. This was done by regular union soldiers,not bummers or renegades & a commander whose family mercifully died out when he was killed by the defense militia (I say mercifully, because my g-g-g uncle swore he would make certain the man had no descendants). It took some 25 years to start over and recover.
There were many strata of "ordinary" Confederates who suffered- and there were far more pernicious abuses of Confederates in Reconstruction and unneeded divisions that redounded to the poorest of them by the vicious union occupation. Such that Rutherford Hayes was only allowed to be elected by removing the damn troops in the 1877 Compromise.
Might makes right does not change the unconstitutional outcome-my opinion. The assumption that I have some lost cause advocacy (which appears to derive from the "poor man fighting the rich man's war" argument), is quite understandable (though untrue) when viewed through your family's experiences. What upsets me is the current resurgence of this kind of dictatorial central government and presidency- acting without regard to law, as before. Hence, my tagline.
The man took up arms against his own country. He killed fellow Americans, North and South. Lee was no great American.
And I would say either are you.
Ike Pays Tribute to Lee
Stratford, Va, May 4th (INS)
President Eisenhower paid tribute to Robert E. Lee Sunday by declaring the Confederate general and his forebears were men of “vision and courage” needed in the world now.
The Chief Executive spoke briefly at annual ceremonies at Stratford hall, Virginia Mansion where Lee was born.
Mr. Eisenhower said Lee and his ancestor, Thomas Lee, who built Stratford, lived in an economy which was self-contained. He noted this in no longer holds true today and that every American is dependent on other peoples.
Of the Lees, Mr. Eisenhower said: “They were men of vision and courage and they would not have shrunk from the duties that would make America what they wanted it to be.”

History is legion with folks who admired Lee from his adversaries on the field(Grant) to European martial experts (Churchill) and so forth.
These clowns are so hung up on the “negro” aspect of our past they wouldn’t know an Amos and Andy DVD collection if it hit them on the head.
they are barely indistinguishable from regular liberals who think America and by extension Western Civilization are both one big crime against humanity...minorities and women in particular.
So what?
That doesn’t remove the stain of TREASON against the United States from Lee’s career.
The man was a great officer who chose the wrong side and he had to live and die with the decision. The man himself was good enough to realize it. Unfortunately those of you who want to rewrite history do the man injustice by pulling this crap out again and again and again and again adnauseam.

Respecting your August 1 inquiry calling attention to my often expressed admiration for General Robert E. Lee, I would say, first, that we need to understand that at the time of the War Between the States the issue of Secession had remained unresolved for more than 70 years. Men of probity, character, public standing and unquestioned loyalty, both North and South, had disagreed over this issue as a matter of principle from the day our Constitution was adopted.
General Robert E. Lee was, in my estimation, one of the supremely gifted men produced by our Nation.He believed unswervingly in the Constitutional validity of his cause which until 1865 was still an arguable question in America; he was thoughtful yet demanding of his officers and men, forbearing with captured enemies but ingenious, unrelenting and personally courageous in battle, and never disheartened by a reverse or obstacle. Through all his many trials, he remained selfless almost to a fault and unfailing in his belief in God. Taken altogether, he was noble as a leader and as a man, and unsullied as I read the pages of our history.
From deep conviction I simply say this: a nation of men of Lee’s caliber would be unconquerable in spirit and soul. Indeed, to the degree that present-day American youth will strive to emulate his rare qualities, including his devotion to this land as revealed in his painstaking efforts to help heal the nation’s wounds once the bitter struggle was over, we, in our own time of danger in a divided world, will be strengthened and our love of freedom sustained.
Such are the reasons that I proudly display the picture of this great American on my office wall.
