Assemblyman Tim Donnelly was cited today for having a loaded .45-caliber handgun in his carry-on bag at the Ontario airport.
The Twin Peaks Republican was stopped at a security checkpoint about 6:45 a.m. and eventually cited and released by airport police, said Nico Melendez, spokesman for the federal Transportation Security Administration.
Donnelly's spokeswoman, Cassandra Joiner, said the citation is for possession of an unloaded handgun. But Melendez said the .45-caliber Colt Mark IV had four rounds in its magazine and a spare magazine with five additional rounds.
"When he was packing to leave, he had forgotten that it was in there," Joiner said. "He didn't realize it when he put it through the metal detector."
Donnelly, a supporter of the constitutional right to bear arms, was scheduled to board Southwest Airlines Flight 661 from Ontario to Sacramento, Melendez said. Lawmakers are returning to the Capitol today for the first session of 2012.

oops
Would the same thing have happened if this occurred in NYC?
Send him to New York and lock him up for life.
Good. No one should carry an unloaded .45...
I put on a heavy winter coat one chilly day in 2002 and forgot that there was a .32 in my pocket. A waitress somehow saw it in my coat that I had hung up. Arrested, jailed, tried, convicted of a felony - Illinois.
Some here advocate that I should never have a right to carry or to vote for that matter. Thankfully Illinois still allows me to vote.
How did he get it there in the first place if he didn’t check any luggage?
Did our people miss it in his carry-on when he left for Ontario?
Wow. That’s awful.
Interesting that he gets tagged like this a few days before all the petitions are due. And that it's announced by someone who's last name ends in -ez.
Nah, the Rats wouldn't pull something like that, would they?
I thought Ontario Cali
He was traveling from Ontario California to Sacramento?
California or Canada how did he get the gun there if he didn’t check bags?
Just another perfect example of how the Second Amendment is abused, propagandized, cherry-picked and otherwise subjected to slow death by "Twenty Thousand Rules."
And how there will always be some ignorant jerk spouting "Hang-em-high" or "they should have known" crap, never realizing that at ANY time of their choosing LEO can find a felony offense somewhere on their property and in the blink of an eye THEIR mouthy butt flops over to the other side of the "former felon" fence.
See anyone screwing with any of your OTHER enumerated Rights because of this one issue?
Free Speech for instance? No, not at all.
Voting, as you mentioned? Nope.
Trial by Jury? No way, that would cut into the lawyers gig.
Excessive bail? Excessive fines? Cruel and Unusual punishments inflicted (other than this)?
NO. NO. NO.
WHY?
Because the American Citizen can not, when all else fails, hang onto all OF the other enumerated rights without the Second.
And the shitty little bastards that have recently (relativity speaking) pushed through the none-constitutional anti-Second Amendment rules depriving you of that very Unalienable Right... endowed by the Creator... KNOW IT.
So if some here advocate that you should never have a right to carry or to vote just remind them that every single one of the Founding Fathers was told that same ignorant BS from an oppressive government, every signer of the Constitution was a "felon" of their day according to that same oppressive government and ask them how do they feel about being on THAT side of the oppressive government fence?
.
I was thinking that since the TSA would never make a mistake that he obtained it before returning
He SHOULD be cited for carrying an UNLOADED handgun! What good is that? And why so few rounds in the mags?
Oh, sorry. I see that this is in a liberal looney panty-wetting hoplophobe state. They want him to be disarmed, not be BETTER armed. Oh.
The weapon wasn’t loaded: four rounds in the mag doesn’t equal one in the chamber. Also, both mags were loaded below capacity, which makes no sense at all.
Beyond the (very) cold winter, I’m way to small to conceal my Mk IV, but I can, and do, haul the USPc .40 with me as standard wandering about dress. Be advised that it has 11 rounds aboard, with one in the chamber, and, of course, the backup 10 round mag on the belt.
Just me, but I see no need to cart around an unloaded weapon. I guess I did enough of that gig when, way back when, I played Army.
I hope you didn’t tip her.
Double check and “shakedown” all bags before flying. I had a very bad half hour in a security area after an errant live pistol cartridge was found down in the seam of a carry on bag I’d used on a range. Thought I’d be detained, but I was let go with a stern talking-to, since my bio and story matched an innocent tale of an honest mistake.
But a .45 caliber pistola.......
Damn, that’s careless. You gotta be a Senator’s lackey to get away with that kind of boo-boo. (Right, Sen. Webb?)
He lives on the Ontario end of that trip, and works on the Sacramento end. Probably just brought a different bag from home.
