Right out of the gate, a Ron Paul supporter advertised for and offered considerable money for evidence of sexual impropriety by Perry, with men or women, and got nothing.
I shouldn't be surprised a Santorum supporter would stoop to that level. His neocon big gov't record, flip flops and political failings are ignored by those obsessed with his social message.
Santorum has no business running. In a rematch with Bob Casey for his old senate seat, he'd lose. Only self-delusion lets him pretend he could beat Obama. If the GOP are down to Santorum, all is lost.
I doubt it ... 2006 was a 'perfect storm' year against GOP candidates in general. Consider this:
- Santorum hacked off the base with his 2004 support of Specter over Toomey in the GOP Senate primary
- His opponent was the son of popular pro-life Democrat governor
- Democrat governor Fast Eddie Rendell was up for re-election, and had coattails
- General dissatisfaction with the GOP over GWB and the Iraq war
- The usual vote fraud problems in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh
So now, 6 years later:
- Toomey is a sitting senator
- Casey has been a back-bencher with no real legislative accomplishments other than being Harry Reid's parrot, and has turned his back on his pro-life supporters
- There is now a popular GOP governor in PA
- GWB and Iraq are now ancient history among the electorate
- The 2010 Tea Party GOP wave election
Personally, I wish Santorum had sought his old Senate seat, like George Allen is doing now in VA: I think he'd win in a landslide. With that said, I think he'll surprise in the primary season ... don't count him out yet.
