City government used to be about management: keeping it safe, maintained and prosperous.

Now it’s all about graft and pensions for public employees. No money left to fix potholes.

***Of course it would help if the Obama administration would stop wasting money on stupid things and would start spending it to rebuild this country. ****

Perhaps during his second term (gag)he could start another “Urban Renewal” program like LBJ did! After the money is appropriated and spent we will see no change but the money will disappear.

When you visit many of these cities and look into the sunken eyes of the residents, you almost get the feeling that something has sucked all of the hope and all of the life right out of them.

Yup...socialism 'll do that to ya.

"But the reality is that these economic conditions are spreading and they will get to where you live soon enough."

Yes, and mentioning that in conversation with local government income recipients can elicit hysterical, angry responses. ...fun experiment. Mentioning property values falling for the next couple of decades can instigate even more fun. ;-)

Speaking of Detroit, it is almost unbelievable what has happened to "the motor city"....

The photo accompanying the article is heartbreaking.

I do work in historic preservation, and seeing something like that is stab to my soul -- and to all of America's soul.

Btw, Chris Hedges, a writer who is mentioned in the article, is on C-Span2 BookTV now.

Would be interesting to see where the most guns are being acquired. I would have thought flyover country, not places like Detroit, largely because the big city regulations are still so bothersome and the 2nd amendment cases haven’t all cranked through court yet.

Loss of prosperity, and also loss of people — abortion-on-demand has done its dirty underhanded work for how many decades now?

Weeds often have the last laugh, the pride and ambitions of man, our beautiful buildings collapse or are destroyed, what stands in their place are weeds. There is something in our national character that like those weeds that will let us survive. In America there are those who by blood are survivors and opportunists, who can take any situation and turn it into profit. It is that spirit that will save this country, not socialism, not government. The people of this country move around and seek opportunity, some cities might fall into waste but another city will spring up. Sure there are those inner city populations that shall inhabit the shells of those places no longer viable but given time they will fade away especially if their government subsidies dry up. Being dysfunctional is not a long term survival strategy.

This is what happens when a great nation sends two centuries of savings, jobs and development to a communist nation, for cheap crap at Walmart.

Ruins of Detroit, if you haven’t seen them. Amazing.

— Obama isn’t helping anything, but the shipping of our industrial base overseas has been going on since the 90s. Ross Perot was right when he warned of the “sucking sound” of our jobs leaving the country.
