US election 2012: Mitt Romney On Course For Historic Double Victory Mitt Romney could strike a decisive early blow in the contest to pick the Republican partys presidential nominee by becoming the first candidate ever to win both the first two states to vote, opinion polls suggest.
By Jon Swaine 01 Jan 2012 The former Massachusetts governor leads the party field both in Iowa, where tomorrows caucuses will give the candidates their first test, and in New Hampshire, where voters go to the polls next Tuesday.
If successful, Mr Romney would become the first Republican challenger in the modern primary systems 35-year history to win both states. Party strategists concede that such a scenario would effectively end the contest after just one week of voting.
The double-victory would be particularly significant because of the states contrasting electorates. While Mr Romney, who made $250 million (£160 million) as a private equity executive, impresses New Hampshires fiscal conservatives, he is loathed by some Iowan social conservatives for his moderate stances on abortion and gay rights.
However, while his more Right-wing rivals have risen and fallen in the polls, the 64-year-old has steadily persuaded voters in both states that he has the best chance of beating President Barack Obama, who, he claims, doesnt understand America.
"The president takes his inspiration from the social democrats of Europe, who would try to change us into a European-style welfare state," he told a rally at a packed restaurant in Atlantic last night.

all GOP primaries should be change to re-vote until someone gets over 50%
anyone at the bottom is dropped
75% want someone more conservative than “Mitt”-for-brains, but he is going to claim to ‘win’?
I didn't read any further into the rest of the "opinionated" statement.
Mitt Romney was seated next to a little girl on an airplane trip back to MA. He turned to her and said, “Let’s talk. I’ve heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.”The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to The Mitt, “What would you like to talk about?””Oh, I don’t know,” said the Mitt. “How about What Changes I Should Make To America?” and he smiles.”OK,” she says. “That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?” Mittens, visibly surprised by the little girl’s intelligence, thinks about it for a second and finally says, “Hmmm, I have no idea.”To which the little girl replies, “Do you really feel qualified to change America when you don’t know #$%$ ?
FUMR
You forgot the BARF ALERT
Free Republic is an Anit-Romney website. He needs to lose as he doesn’t represent Conservatives.
You can probably ask the Moderators to edit the Title for you.
No gold for Willard in Iowa. He paid them out of his pocket in ‘08 and still only walked away with a lousy silver.
Mitt Romney On Course For Historic Double Victory
Dumb headline.
I prefer.. Willard Flopney On Course Per All Polling To Lose Every Southern Primary
And conservatives have made this possible by not getting together and supporting one of the other contenders. Great, just great.
Two States that allow cross-over votes at that.
Two States who whore themselves out for the money to be spent in their States because they are first.
Who appointed them to be first anyway> How did that happen? Does anyone know? What is the history and argument for such a thing?
Why do thes two States get first choice of candidates? and why is it legal for them to change their dates in ad finitem to stay that way?
“”You know the nomination process is messed up when 2 out of 50 states are considered so important.”””
Bingo, we have just begun. Stand my FReep’s!!
Thanks Steelfish.
“You know the nomination process is messed up when 2 out of 50 states are considered so important.”
and they are two blue states to boot. Why are they so important to the GOP process? Doesn’t make sense.
OMG................shoot me.
Looks now like the only way to stop Romney would be for obvious losers Bachmann and Gingrich to drop out, then act as a team to endorse Santorum or Perry.
Don’t know how accurate the reporting here....I’m just certain anyone would be better than Hussein. I know there is a lot of angst over our entire field....Mitt w/his suckass health plan, Newt with his Pelosi photo op, Paul’s kookiness, Huntsman and his Hussein butt smooching, Santorum’s support of Arlen Sphincter, etc.
I just think any of them would be better than Hussein.
All but Willard the Liberal.
The 5th and 6th place finishers Tuesday should get out of the race and endorse Newt or Santorum.
