Because that's what Barry Goldwater said, too. And, since, Section 5 did not apply to all states, Goldwater voted against the Voting Rights Act.
The Johnson administration labelled his act "racist"...and the black vote has belonged to the Democrats ever since.
Ironic, isn't it, that the black vote should take umbrage at a man who wanted Section 5 to be applied in Illinois as well as Mississippi?
