I read this comment at the NYT when they covered this story and it sort of stuck with me so I went and looked it up:
“If there have been 3 deaths for 670,000 copies. . . that’d be 4.4 per million. In the US, the overall rate of child death by parental abuse was 23.3 per million in 2008, roughly 8 times greater. So, households containing the Pearl book are far LESS likely to experience a child death by abuse that households not containing the book.
If the statistics are to be believed, we could lower the child abuse rate significantly by distributing a copy of the Pearl book to new mothers leaving the hospital.”
Maybe it is just me, maybe I am just prejudice but I think the best parenting skills can be learned from your Grandmothers.

Good point!
Those without the book have far worse records than those that do.
We could apply the same to those that have, and do not have the Bible.
Even our creator, God, whom is our Heavenly Father chastens those He loves.
“For whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, and scourageth every son whom He receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth you as sons; for what son is he whom the Father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons.”(Hebrews 12:6-8)
“Futhermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverance: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure: but He for our profit. that we might be partakers of His holiness.” (Hebrews 12:9-10)
No way does this excuse those that abuse and offend and hurt children. The Lord made it clear that even to offend those little ones that believe in Him. “It would be better that they put a millstone about their neck and jump into the sea.” (Matthew 18:6)
Another is: “By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.” (Proverbs 16:6)
Unfortunately the logic of your analysis is lost on most folks. They prefer the illogic of the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy.
