Lemme guess! He bowed and scraped and apologized to the Japanese people and Emperor for ear damage caused to Japanese pilots flying overhead when American ships suddenly blew up below them.

( I stole that from a MAD magazine cartoon about 45 years ago.)

“Yesterday December 29th 1941 a day that will live in infamy”.
Hmm, something doesn’t sound right.

That MAD Magazine article from around 1963 contrasted how Hollywood depicted Germans & Japs in movies made during World War Two and after the war was over.

IIRC,

(During) “The Japanese soldier is bucktoothed, sadistic, and screams orders in pidgin English.”

(After) “The Japanese is usually an officer whose teeth are capped and speaks soft, impeccable English.

The MAD article did indeed predict that future WWII films would have FDR apologizing to Hirohito for exploding U.S. ships giving Japanese pilots headaches.

I sortof expected him to run around the observation deck with his arms outstretched like wings, making machine gun noises and spitting as he ran by the Memorial, pretending to dive bomb the sunken Battleship. /s

(Same thing happened to me observing Japanese teenager tourists back on the late 80s and a couple of swabbies and tour guide held me back saying it wasn’t worth it.)
