My father in law was on a ship that was to be used in the invasion of japan, and I guarantee you that every American at the time favored the use of nukes and if we had them earlier we would have used them and saved more American lives.

If he did oppose Iran, it would only be because he perceives his personal religion to be more righteous than Iran and he wants them removed from any chance of challenging or hindering his own power machinations.
It is more likely he would give up an entire Carrier Task Force for complete enemy seizure to bolster an American adversary’s status than to defend or promote American interests.
He wants them to worship him more than he wants to represent the US.
