Minimum wages laws were enacted to allow the unions to compete against the nonunion shops
Each time the minimum wage is raised, some unions get a big raise since many of their contracts are based on the MW. It's the dirty secret no one will discuss. When you hear a dem demanding an increase in the MW, they are actually demanding a raise for their union buddies.
