2012 prediction from Canada
National Post ^ | 12/28/2011 | Kelly McParland

I’m not 100% sure (which is rare for a pundit), but at this point I’m pretty certain Barack Obama is going to win the U.S. election next November.

His numbers at the moment aren’t that good. They haven’t been good for some time. Hardly any Americans think the country is on the right track. Unemployment is near record numbers. The housing crisis persists, with home values a fraction what they were a few years ago. No one thinks the White House has a handle on the situation, and it’s been a long time since the President was able to rouse the kind of enthusiasm he did on a regular basis in 2008.

Still, I think he’s going to win, mainly because the Republicans seem to have a death wish.

This jackass is both wrong and right. His prediction that Obama will be re-elected is probably wrong, because the economy is still going to suck in November 2012 and that will be the issue that people vote on. He is wrong when he says that Obama isn't an "egomaniac socialist revolutionary from Kenya." (He is.) But he is right about the Republican death wish. I am so sick of our side tearing each other apart. We need to be attacking Obama and the Democrats, not each other. I am sick of reading "if Romney/Gingrich/Perry is the nominee, I will stay home." Thats as good as voting for Obama. The circular firing squad has to stop.

Astronaut, I couldn't agree with you more. The problem with having so many people trying to become the GOP candidate, the are just doing what the Democrats won't have it. Point out deficiencies in each other. Our people need to be attacking Obama and his policies. But the won't because the left wing government run media will attack them for being racists. I don't care what the color of Obama’s skin is. We all know he is half black and half white. We all know we need to get him out of office. If he gets reelected, we might as well just move to another country because the United States will become a third world shit whole run by the United Nations.
My nominate for the GOP is Newt. Baggage or not, he is the most likely to bring this country out of recession, near depression, Obama has intentionally launched us into.

I agree that he's both right and wrong, but for different statements, both in the same overly long sentence.

...he’s going to win, mainly because the Republicans seem to have a death wish. Not since they put forward Barry Goldwater against Lyndon Johnson have they seemed so intent on running a candidate with little mass appeal but who was able to tick off a series of ideological benchmarks dear to the hearts of the party’s fiercest and most uncompromising zealots.

GOP death wish & fielding of the wrong candidate both sound accurate to me. But, the whole problem is that the pubbies apparently will give us another McLame, a Dole, GHW Bush next-in-line good old boy. "Ideological benchmarks" and "fierce and uncompromising zealots" aren't part of the picture unless you count Ron Paul who I think they continue to give a voice only to give actual conservatives a bad name.

The GOP has Spent the post Reagan years pressing forward with an entirely non conservative candidate list and losing more than they won. (OK, GWB is a nice guy and probably the best man for the job at that time, but he ain't no conservative.)

By this time they should have learned that when they push forward another old "moderate" guy (who has been on the list for a decade or more) the actual moderates will still vote democrat. By this time they should have figured out that in 2008 people voted for Sara Palin and not for John McCain. By this time they should be aware that handing a second victory to the worst, most "progressdive", president ever just might be their last official act.

So, yeah, you could call it a circular firing squad.

Sorry, “progressdive” was not a lame attempt at coining some new cutsey on line term. It was a lame attempt at rewording after running spellcheck.

I’m not optimistic that we’ll win, not due to anyone we put forward, but rather the large numbers of stupid moderates out there who vote on feelings and not any genuine political convictions (I’m sure all of us spent some time with some during the holidays).

I will not vote for Romney nor Obama - either is a vote for the destruction of the United States and indeed the world. there is no difference between the outcomes, I used to live in Massachusetts and know all too well of the danger of Romney. I believe Romney could be worse than Obama, because he will be able to get MORE done than Obama. Yet Romney and Obama are cut from the same cloth, ideologically speaking.

Romney avoided eye-contact when he shook my hand at a rally once.

That’s all it took for me. We’re screwed if he’s the nom.

Couldn't agree with you more.

AFAIC, I'd prefer to have a candidate that I agree with at least 80% of the time (pretty much anyone with an (R) after their name) vs one that I agree with 20% or less of the time (pretty much anyone with a (D) after their name).

Were it only that other FReepers were as forgiving.

I agree with you on Newt. To this point, he's the only one who looks like he's running for president. He's on the offensive, attacking Obama, like he already has the nomination.

The rest of the field is too busy sniping at each other. They look more like a bunch of teens running for Class President, than world-class statesmen.

Am I thrilled with Newt? Not particularly. But, I don't need to like the guy personally, I just need to think that he's good enough for me to hire him to run the country.

And, frankly, I'd enjoy watching him run rings around BO at the debates. Talking about having a battle of wits with an unarmed person.......
