Im not 100% sure (which is rare for a pundit), but at this point Im pretty certain Barack Obama is going to win the U.S. election next November.
His numbers at the moment arent that good. They havent been good for some time. Hardly any Americans think the country is on the right track. Unemployment is near record numbers. The housing crisis persists, with home values a fraction what they were a few years ago. No one thinks the White House has a handle on the situation, and its been a long time since the President was able to rouse the kind of enthusiasm he did on a regular basis in 2008.
Still, I think hes going to win, mainly because the Republicans seem to have a death wish.

...hes going to win, mainly because the Republicans seem to have a death wish. Not since they put forward Barry Goldwater against Lyndon Johnson have they seemed so intent on running a candidate with little mass appeal but who was able to tick off a series of ideological benchmarks dear to the hearts of the partys fiercest and most uncompromising zealots.
GOP death wish & fielding of the wrong candidate both sound accurate to me. But, the whole problem is that the pubbies apparently will give us another McLame, a Dole, GHW Bush next-in-line good old boy. "Ideological benchmarks" and "fierce and uncompromising zealots" aren't part of the picture unless you count Ron Paul who I think they continue to give a voice only to give actual conservatives a bad name.
The GOP has Spent the post Reagan years pressing forward with an entirely non conservative candidate list and losing more than they won. (OK, GWB is a nice guy and probably the best man for the job at that time, but he ain't no conservative.)
By this time they should have learned that when they push forward another old "moderate" guy (who has been on the list for a decade or more) the actual moderates will still vote democrat. By this time they should have figured out that in 2008 people voted for Sara Palin and not for John McCain. By this time they should be aware that handing a second victory to the worst, most "progressdive", president ever just might be their last official act.
So, yeah, you could call it a circular firing squad.
Sorry, “progressdive” was not a lame attempt at coining some new cutsey on line term. It was a lame attempt at rewording after running spellcheck.
I’m not optimistic that we’ll win, not due to anyone we put forward, but rather the large numbers of stupid moderates out there who vote on feelings and not any genuine political convictions (I’m sure all of us spent some time with some during the holidays).
Romney avoided eye-contact when he shook my hand at a rally once.
That’s all it took for me. We’re screwed if he’s the nom.
AFAIC, I'd prefer to have a candidate that I agree with at least 80% of the time (pretty much anyone with an (R) after their name) vs one that I agree with 20% or less of the time (pretty much anyone with a (D) after their name).
Were it only that other FReepers were as forgiving.
The rest of the field is too busy sniping at each other. They look more like a bunch of teens running for Class President, than world-class statesmen.
Am I thrilled with Newt? Not particularly. But, I don't need to like the guy personally, I just need to think that he's good enough for me to hire him to run the country.
And, frankly, I'd enjoy watching him run rings around BO at the debates. Talking about having a battle of wits with an unarmed person.......
