“Artefact” is an older spelling of the word; I thought that it was obsolete, but maybe not in Blighty.

That stone looks awful clean to have been buried all those years. My first thought was maybe it was a caricature of a Pict, but since it doesn’t appear antiquated, I’m not too sure about it.

The problem is it was all mossy when they found it and, unthinkingly, they cleaned it up before bringing it in.
All washed and wire-brushed. I don’t know how any lab could get around that.
Microscopic nooks and crannies?

Oh, I didn’t read that they’d scrubbed away any clues. How unfortunate.

My first thought—a rainspout gargoyle from a church. Carving them gave the masons a little humor therapy...is it hollow, and could water run out its mouth?

Since it hasn’t been tested - why is it even described as ‘800’ years old?????????
Or have the couple and reporters already determined it is related to the 13th Century Church?
