People have been using drugs(including alcohol) for thousands of years. Animals consuming substances to change their reality is a part of nature. Not only in humans, but countless other organisms. Outlawing it is like trying to outlaw sex.
Outlawing something that grows in the ground for pennies only ensures this unstoppable market is supplied by violent criminals selling dangerous, dirty products (drug dealers are today's violent bootleggers hawking bathtub gin). Legalizing ensures clean, safe products sold by legitimate nonviolent businesses. Look at the liquor stores and distilleries of today versus bootleggers. Also look at the clean, nonviolent drugstores of the 20th century that sold cocaine and heroin over the counter.
Yes, some people were addicted but nobody had to steal to support their addiction or use dirty drugs. In 1900, a middle-class housewife could have afforded a cocaine addiction and openly discussed it with her doctor as a medical condition. Today, that addiction would cost tens of thousands every month. As a result, an addict will steal $100,000 in property, fence it for $10,000 and pay a violent dealer for a dirty, unknown drug that could harm them for life. They don't ask for help with their illness because they would be looked upon as criminals or scum.
And the majority of true addicts are not “too chicken” to change their reality. They have psychological issues that make reality a terrible place. Often as a result of child abuse or trauma. Even though prohibition has made them more expensive than gold, drugs are still cheaper than paying $150+ per hour for real therapy. I have experience working with substance abuse patients and still have friends that are certified abuse counselors. Putting these sick people in prison does nothing but make their reality worse and only ensures they will start using within hours of release. It's easy to look at an addict and call him/her scum or chicken that should be caged. It's a bit harder to actually talk to them and find they were abandoned and used by their family and "friends" all their life- discarded like trash into the street after getting old enough to refuse being sold to "dad's" friends (a true story that still haunts me).
If there were a crime wave in Toronto, would you avoid Vancouver?

You compare Canada to the endless brutal violence down in Mexico?
Amazing...
Would ya like to see some real violent pics from our great neighbors down in Mexico?
There are thousands of pics, hundreds that show headless people hanging from freeway overpasses, dumped into the streets, fields, etc.
Lemme know if you'd like to see some real graphic ones. Of course it might be too graphic for the easily offended here.
Below is where a whole bunch of dead people were just recently dumped out of trucks, onto the roadway in broad daylight...Mexican style.
I have too.
Problem is you can't do it legally.
You’re missing the whole point about the differences among Mexican regions.
No, I’m not missing anything.
Enjoy your vacation in the gringo hotels down in ol’ Mehico. As long as the cartels keeping getting their cut, ya should be safe. Best of luck amigo!
Good ideer. Like the folks in the story, you might not even need a return ticket!
You'll find it in your local library stacked right next to the free-fire zone map of Hades.
Still, if you are persuaded and do travel, then when things go haywire, like they did for these folks, you'll at least get to meet Elvis.
I smell a whiff of bigotry in your persistent hostility.
And you still ignore the point that there are places where the drug crime has not intruded.
No, you're the one that clearly has ignored or are just ignorant of the fact the cartels now control about 40 percent of the Mexican government. No where is safe in Mexico, and even many of the gringo hotels where some Americans feel they are safe, are in fact controlled by the cartels or are being paid protection money by the hotels. Same with many of the cruise lines.
You can keep popping off about how you know of these safe havens for tourist. That's just stupid, because the fact is much of that country's government, including it's GD law enforcement are corrupt to the core.
I could care less if you want to vacation in Mexico.
That's your business.
I just said there is no way would I or my family would ever cross that border again. We used to drive into Mexico years ago for regular fishing trips, before the country and it's government were controlled by violent criminals and drug terrorist. Never again, not me or mine.
Have fun!

And tell me where I can learn more about the protection money paid by hotels and cruise lines in those cities.
Can you stick your head any further into the sand?
Good God man, the cartels have infiltrated the Mexican government, Mexican law enforcement and control much of that government. Everyone is paying the cartels, from the cab drivers to the hotel chains.
You don't believe this?
lol..
In fact, you were even told by United State Department of Justice, and law enforcement in Arizona, the Mexican terrorist control large parts of Arizona...Right here in the United States, yet you don't believe their controlling much of the Mexican government and Mexican law enforcement? ...lol
You want evidence?
This is a joke right?
Good grief!

Even if we include the entire nation and the dangerous areas I wouldn’t go, can you advise how many American tourists have been killed, compared to the number of American tourists who have visited without being killed. Then we’ll be able to determine whether a week in Mexico is more or less dangerous than driving to the airport to catch the flight.

First Lady and Beelzebubba Says Mexico Still Safe for Travel
First lady Michelle Obama said Mexico is still a safe country for Americans to travel with their families and said she hopes to bring her daughters south of the border for a visit.
Wow~
Too bad your friends didn't closely study the Mexican laws regarding resident aliens before deciding to buy property there. They're pretty harsh, by American standards. Can't vote, can't own firearms, don't have the same property rights as Mexican citizens, etc. Legal immigrants are definitely second class citizens there.
And with the increase in serious violence there, I honestly don't see what the draw is. Hopefully your friends aren't stuck there.
Another post evading my simple questions.
Insults without info make you look bad.
Things have only gotten worse since then, don't know how much worse it would have to get to moved them out of there. They still have tons of company, mostly from Holland, I think.
I think I remember they said the property they bought was like a long term lease from the government.
I recall something about that from reading about Mexican immigration rules. Essentially, foreigners can't own their own property free and clear, like native Mexicans can.
