UPDATE (12.53am): Sources at RPV are telling me that the 2,000 signatures do not have addresses on them meaning that they cannot be verified. Newt Gingrich may very well be off the ticket in Virginia, folks
Rumor has it this evening that one of the petition gatherers was not qualified to circulate petitions which technically disqualifies those signatures in Virginia.
This would mean that the only two campaigns that qualified in the Virginia primary will be Ron Paul and Mitt Romney.
However and theres always a however former State Senator Marty Williams back in 2007 was accused of having a handler circulate petitions to get him on the ballot that was not legally able to do so. The court ruled that, though the petitioner was not legally entitled to circulate the petitions, the enfranchisement of those who did sign the petitions trumped the lack of qualifications the petition gatherer held.
Ergo, even if this report is right, Gingrich will have the names needed to qualify for the Virginia ballot.
If
these reports are true
The Key words is IF and Rumor...
I sure hope it isn’t true!
GOP: Perry fails to make Va. primary ballot; Gingrichs fate unclear as signatures verified...
When is/was the deadline and what is the # of signatures required? No one asked me to sign. It’s kind of obvious he’s running but if they exclude him it’s more of a sign the party elites really don’t want him to win—which means I want him even more.
The elites don’t want to win...they want to win the Senate and then run against Obama predecessor in 2016. So many rinos think it’s their’s to take in 2016 they want Romney to get the nomination to guarantee a loss. I’m telling you I’ve heard several of my friends who are pretty much 100% liberal republicans who are really in Romney’s alley say they will never vote for a Mormon! I would as I think Mormons truly do have great family values, but these tards would vote for Obama before a Mormon. The democRATS know this and so do the RINO elites who want to run in 2016.
Santorum is our last hope before going full bore Gingrich, and Santorum hasn’t impressed me one bit. So Gingrich is the default winner. BTW: I had bachman early on but man she irritates the nerves when she speaks. No only is she not inspirational but she is anti-inspirational. Even if she is right on the issues she won’t motivate the people to follow. I liked her on Facebook early on and had to “unlike” her as she was a drag on us a leader.
We know that Newt didn’t leave the Republican party because Reagan was elected, Romney did do that in the 1980s, and then Romney came out against the Contract with America in the 90s.
Perry and Newt should have made time, or at least their Virginia handlers, to go on whatever talk show there is in Virginia and let people know they places they could go to sign up.
They were paying people to collect them. If they were just doing it this week and when the guy came in he hadn’t asked for the addresses, then they were stuck with submitting these. I can imagine a lot of people might be willing to sign but would not be willing to put their address down. It just doesn’t stand to reason that the campaign would have had enough time this week to eliminate those suspect ones before turning in the 11,000 they did, which means it’s unlikely 90% of what they turned in was valid.
To me, this seems like a concerted effort by someone to disqualify anyone that would be a serious threat to Mitt. It’s just all too coincidental. I could be wrong but it just seems strange.
UPDATE (1:31am): Soon this will be over. Still doesnt sound good for Newt.Well Newt fans... Get ready...
..whatever talk show there is in Virginia ..”
Good luck with that. Media-wise, Northern VA (the most populous part of the state) is part of DC.
I never read about this stories in other elections. Why, all of a sudden, for this election I hear so many candidates having problem collecting signatures and getting on the ballot
GOP establishment sabotage?
What’s your take on Perry, who looks to come in at least third in the Iowa caucuses?
>> I never read about this stories in other elections
Ditto
UPDATE (1:41am): Well folks if youre truly this interested, stick around for the RPV press release otherwise, I relinquish control of the live-blogging and say gnight and Merry Christmas Eve! UPDATE (1:39am): Final update from RPV should be coming in the next hour or so. Still not looking good for Newt on the inside.
This is really blown out of proportion. Virginia is a super tuesday state. The nominee will likely be decided before then, and even if it isn’t, it’s not like Virginia will be the “decider”.
Isn’t Virginia a squishy, Mittens kind of state anyway?
Newt is OUT.
