Matt Barkley will return to USC for senior season
LA Times ^ | December 22, 2011 | Gary Klein

USC quarterback Matt Barkley announced Thursday that he will return for a final college season.

Barkley made the announcement in front of a Christmas tree and flanked by six Heisman trophies during a packed news conference at USC’s Heritage Hall.

Barkley, a three-year starter and team captain, led USC to a 10-2 record this season and was projected as a top pick in the April draft. He finished sixth in balloting for the Heisman Trophy.

Barkley, 21, made his decision after consulting with coaches, former players, NFL personnel and agents and family and close friends.

Barkley established a Pac-12 record this season by passing for 39 touchdowns. He also set a school record for completion percentage and single-game USC records for touchdowns, completions, passing yardage and total offense.

Barkley was the last of four prominent USC juniors to announce his decision about their futures. All-American left tackle Matt Kalil and defensive end Nick Perry are turning pro. All-American safety T.J. McDonald announced Wednesday that he would return for his senior season.

Barkley’s news conference marked the third time since 2005 that a Trojan quarterback held court in Heritage Hall to announce a decision about returning or turning pro.

Business decision. Next year, he’ll go higher in the draft. Hope it works out for him.

College sports is business. It’s still a good decision.

I became a Matt Barkley fan when I saw him join his cousin, Robbie Boyer, kneeling in prayer before the Notre Dame game. Watched alot of his games from then on, and he’s really good. The game against Stanford, 3 OTs, was one of the best games in a great year for colege football.

They can’t go to a bowl or play in the Pac-whatever championship game next year either.

With the wideouts he has coming back it is a great football decision.

The USC Song Girls wear a lot more clothing than many cheerleaders at other schools, but their uniforms are easily the sexiest in a classy sort of way.

True. The bowl sanctions were for 2010 and this season.

I’m an Irish fan, but I’m glad to see this - Barkley is a class act.

Not only that with those 2 wide outs -Woods and Lee- and an improving defense USC may debut in the top 5 in the polls next year. With Oregon and Notre Dame home games next year and a soft non con sched (Syracuse,Hawaii) and Luck gone next year it could signal USC back in the national Championship hunt.

They guy plays for SUC. What really happened is that Boosters made it more lucrative to stay vs going Pro.

Sound outrageous? Living in LA and knowing what goes on over at Ghetto U. I'm not Joking.

I saw that too. As soon as it was obvious that Barkley and the other player were praying the TV producers took the TV cameras off of them. The networks do not want to show players praying. They treat it like some type of bad behavior that should not be encouraged.

Come on, Barkley comes from a great family, and I work with one of the starting corners of the 2005 team and know some of the stuff that goes on and the booster thing is pretty clean there.

Now if you want to talk about steroids, girls, stuff like that well can’t say anything on that.......

With Pat Haden running the show I would find it hard to be too critical of them now

You won’t be adding a trophy this coming year. They are being punished by the NCAA.
