Buckle your chinstrap, &c.
National Review ^ | 12/22/2011 | Jay Nordlinger

Posted on 12/22/2011 12:52:59 PM PST by Servant of the Cross

Five days ago, a New York Times article delivered a shot heard ’round the world. It came in the form of a statement by Eric Holder, the attorney general. About some of the criticism directed at him, he said, “This is a way to get at the president because of the way I can be identified with him, both due to the nature of our relationship and, you know, the fact that we’re both African-American.”

Buckle your chinstrap: We’re going to be hearing a lot of this sort of thing in 2012. Will it be all race, all the time? I hope not. But it could get very ugly. Left-wing Democrats stoke the fires of race in the best of times. What if Obama is losing?

His presidency was supposed to enhance racial harmony in America. Many of us worry that it will end up doing the opposite.

I talked to Thomas Sowell earlier this year. (For the resulting piece, go here.) He said that, if Obama loses, there could be rioting in the streets. Really? Well, think about it, said Sowell: Would the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons simply sit back and say, “That’s the way the cookie crumbles in a democracy: You win some, you lose some”?

As I remarked in yesterday’s Impromptus, race is often the first refuge of a scoundrel. Republicans often wilt at the first charge of racism. They get the shakes, saying, “Please don’t hate me: I’m really a good person.” Then they get pounded all the more.

We’ll see . . . (snip)

Jay, a little GOP primary? Have you asked Dr. Sowell his take on who the best GOP candidate for Our Future is? As usual, you should follow his wise advice ....

I think it will be a good thing if Obama keeps playing the race card. Blacks instinctively know that the opposition to him is ideological and political, and not racial.

The country is 88% non-black. He couldn’t have been elected without white votes. Did whites all of a sudden become racist?

The race pimps, of course they will agitate, as they always do. It will not rile blacks further, as a matter of fact, I believe they’re becoming a bit embarrassed by Obama, and this embarrasses them further.

And you base this on what?

Racisim noun or adjective

1. Any manifest opposition to tyranny or corruption.

2. Any failure to embrace depravity.

3. Any observation of obvious mortal enmity from another culture, or the desire to protect ones own culture from it.

Will it be all race, all the time?

Yes it will.

His presidency was supposed to enhance racial harmony in America. Many of us worry that it will end up doing the opposite.

Indeed it has!

I think that you’re dreamin’. The most racist race in american is gonna chime right in with the “po’, po’ pitiful me” mantra as usual, and all of the stupid white liberals are gonna fall for it as always. The repub politicians will soil their underwear, as they always do, and nothing will change.

Hey, I say let them riot (assuming that the One™ loses). Let the rioters try to take that crap out of the inner city into the suburbs and country, and just see how far it gets them.

That sort of talk works remarkably well in the American suburbs - where White Guilt is an endemic condition.

And you base this on what?

I coach AAU basketball in the summer and referee HS games in the winter. The black kids of course, don't say much but their parents do. The black parents know me to be conservative. Maybe ten percent of the parents are conservative too. They would never reveal their conservatism before, they do now.

When we travel, politics invariably come up. At least two of the ones who reamed me for not supporting Obama before the election are now telling me he is an embarrassment to them. Not all of them, let's just say the more vocal ones. Those who still support Obama are quiet now. They have nothing to say.

It is becoming apparent that some of them are now aware of who Alan West is. I've heard the name Thomas Sowell come up. Larry Elder.

Admittedly my evidence is anecdotal, but I'm telling you there's a change going on in the black community. They will probably still vote for him in the 90 percent area, but the problem for Obama will be black turnout.

The zeal for him is no longer there.

The real world is not a world in which whites treat them as second class citizens, they are treated by the white parents with respect. Their kids date whites, sons and daughters. The world as painted by the race-mongers and the media is simply not the world they see.

I'm saying the race-card is no longer effective with them, or with whites who believe having elected a black president is a get-out-of-jail card. Playing the race card is at best useless, and at worst may backfire. Whites have made a great deal of effort to atone for the past, they're really tired of this, especially conservatives and independents.
