The Redemption of Newt Gingrich
National Review Online ^ | Ramesh Ponnuru

Posted on 12/22/2011 10:03:47 AM PST by Windy City Conservative

First: Absolution does not perfect character, and even a sincere penitent may have demonstrated, by his past behavior, characteristic weaknesses that could lead to a repetition of the offense. Gingrich has said that his adultery resulted, at least in part, from getting so caught up in his work for the American people as speaker. If that is true, then high office would seem to be an occasion of sin that Americans have a reason of charity to spare him. (If there are stronger reasons on the other side of the case — for example, we think that he’s really the only person who can save the country — they could defeat this charitable obligation.)

Last gasp for Ramesh and the anti-Gingrich crusade. Voting for Gingrich is a sin.

Wow. If he thinks the demand of Speaker resulted in his adultery, then he's going to make Clinton look like a saint if he gets into the White House.

Yep. That’s all I had to read to confirm my opinion: only if the man is the actual candidate would I vote for him, and then with distaste.

Romney can’t get pass 20%-25% and Gingrich is untelegenic as he is unelectable, and Paul is a non-starter. Get over it and move on to other viable candidates.

Newt probably would have been happiest of all in the Mormon faith, before they banned polygamy.

***Gingrich has said that his adultery resulted, at least in part, from getting so caught up in his work for the American people as speaker.***

Sounds eerily familiar to former mayor of Washington DC Marion Berry, who got caught up in drugs and who knows what else. His excuse: “I was working so hard to take care of the people of DC that I forgot to take care of myself”

Conservatives don’t make excuses and don’t like hearing them either.

My opinion is that if Newt simply owns up to the fact that he did wrong; he’s not proud of it, but recognizes the error of his ways, I think most would accept it and move on.

We’re in so much trouble even Vladamir Putin isn’t laughing anymore. Forgive, forget and let’s get this country back.

NR is a liberal rag that is no better than Time or Newsweek. Let them go pump their socialist liberal candidate Romney elsewhere.

Doesn't take much seal your opinion does it? Foolish people who somehow think politicians don't cheat....only differences among them is who gets caught...and then only if it can be used against them in a political environement where citizens seem to think fidility now the leading requirement for the President.

Stupid nation that kills babies, sanctions homosexuals, but somehow thinks adultery disqualifys. We are so past any measure of sanity.

I still don't understand what he could have been thinking to come up with such a lame excuse.

“Making a known adulterer president might run the risk of teaching the false lesson that adultery (or immorality generally) is not important.”

I could care less about Newt’s serial adultery and multiple marriages. Maybe he has learned his lesson, or found a woman he can live with, providing she can continue to live with him. Maybe he hasn’t. Will Newt be a better president than Obama, even if he does play that all American game of musical wives? The answer is yes. If he wants to be a member of your church clergy, send him away. ...I wish this much time would have been given to Obama’s homosexuality, his gay affair, and his frolicking in a gay bathhouse. What is the real reason for Michelle’s separate vacations? Do the taxpayers cover her additional vacation expenses so her husband can have time as the fairy and chief? ...But I digress. Is there any way Newt can contribute to the cultural decay of America to the extent Democrats do? No.

...Newt doesn’t belong in the clergy unless he can prove his repentance and reliability.

President Gingrich. Write it down, read it, shout it, get used to it, because it’s going to happen.

Of course I could be wrong if the Newt haters are successful in nominating Romney, insuring an Obama win of another 4 flipping years to finish destroying America.

GO NEWT GO......

I don’t post here much, so you don’t know how long I have been wary of and generally made anxious listening to Newt. It has taken a lot and he has gone the distance to do it.

he’s now a 68 years old with a trophy wife he’s devoted to who never leaves his side.. Clinton was an habitual sexual harasser, predator and rapist.. hardly in the same category

And the the idea of having an adulteress, and former mistress, as the First Lady, who ends up being a role model to all of America, is truly frightening.
