Gingrich's alleged "baggage" and doubts about his electability don't fully explain why, despite his high standing in the polls, the GOP establishment has been shunning the former Speaker of the House, when not showing outright hostility toward him...
The current Speaker of the House, John Boehner, must be considered a prominent opponent, behind the scenes so far. Boehner, it will be recalled, led the rebellion to remove Gingrich from his post as Speaker back in 1998...
Boehner is hardly alone in fearing a Gingrich presidency. A true insider, Gingrich knows who among his fellow politicians (from his day and since) stands for what -- the real deal not the sort of palaver politicians offer up when they are on their best behavior on TV for the sake of keeping up appearances knowing that it's on the record and that constituents are watching...

I can. It may make the Constitutional candidate unstoppable in 2016. Should I prefer to be manipulated by the Republican establishment over the Democratic establishment or should I refuse to compromise this time around. I’ve made my decision and ask sincerely that you reconsider your’s.

I did read the article. It continually tried to frame the opposition to Gingrich in psycho-emotional terms: he causes “fear,” he’s a “threat” to so-and-so’s position, and so on.
I’m sick of that, and I don’t think it’s helpful.
Even a person whose position is, in fact, threatened by someone’s election may have very good reasons — beyond the implied and purely selfish self-interest — to oppose that person’s candidacy. Such as it would not be in the best interest of the country.
There was no direct quote attributed to Newt, no video of the encounter, no secondary sources, just the liberal gay college professor telling the NY DAILY NEWS what Newt said to him... if that is enough for you... so be it.
p.s. Newt just emailed Rush that he supported the repubs in the 1-year tax cut, contrary to what the WSJ and other sources said about him...

Well, it is almost certainly true that neither McConnell nor Boehner want’s to deal with Newt as President. And it is unlikely that Romney will do anything but support them against the conservatives in Congress. As far as the country is concerned, however, we need to do more than let the Speaker or the Minority Reader comfortable. Maybe if Paul gets Iowa they were have worse than Newt to worry about.

Newt has a double propaganda value to the MSM.
The hippy left still thinks of him as a vast right wing extremist, so they will be scared, indeed. That meme will probably play over to the ignorant middle, as well.
Conservatives still remember, or at least many of them do, that the reason Boner was able to shovel Newt out of the Speaker’s chair was that at the time Newt was seen as having caved in and betrayed his base, and it was thought that Boner would be more conservative.
That turned out to be a joke, of course. Newt and Boner were both thought to be conservatives until it came to the crunch, and then they both caved in like good Establishment insiders. Newt started out well, but by then he was doing whatever clinton told him to do. Boner started out well, too—until he got into office. The usual thing.
It’s an interesting article that contains a quiet bombshell. Apparently, Gingrich and Boehner have a “history.” And, if GOP party bosses are lukewarm on Gingrich, it could work in his favor.
But, I agree with you, that proclaiming others are “afraid” of your favored candidate, hence say not-nice things, is getting old.
You are forgetting - the republicans in congress have no principles, so the only way to explain their views against Gingrich is to describe their fear, self-interest, and the fact that he may not tow their party line, which they so assiduously put in place over the past years.
But this entire article is psychobabble. It frames the opposition to Gingrich in purely psycho-emotional terms: they “fear” him.
Why isn't it enough to state the objective fact that they oppose him, and then analyze whether that opposition is or is not well-founded?
By framing it in psycho-emotional terms, the author is already dismissing, for all practical purposes, any legitimate objective basis for these people opposing Gingrich's candidacy.
Instead, the analysis hangs on the inference that these people oppose Gingrich for *purely* selfish reasons, and that no other reasons are a factor in their opposition.
First of all, the motives of these people are not knowable. Second of all, their motives are not relevant.
What is relevant is an examination of how Gingrich would govern, and the opinions of those who have actually served in government with him are one thing to consider. Assuming one doesn't shrug them off with the psychobabble that those opinions — regardless that one may disagree with them on substantive grounds — simply represent personal “fear” and “feeling threatened.”
