My friend who lives in Washington State says she can’t understand why there are any people in her state that are hungry as there is an abundance of food in the forests ripe for the picking.
I'm especially fond of the hamburger trees myself.
When I was kid, June was for picking wild stawberries, July was for blackberries and raspberries, August for blueberries, and October was for apples.
Mom and Dad had a huge freezer, we froze gallons of stuff. Not enough to "live off the land", but it sure made a dent in the grocery budget.
At certain times of the year, but not always.
I'd still trade a week's pay for a pan of my Mom's fresh blackberry cobbler. There was a huge patch, growing wild, an easy walk from our house. The neighbors who owned the land (could be counted among those who 'would starve because they're too lazy to feed themselves') said "Help yourself, we'll never do anything with it."
I'd run over, pick a bucket to have with breakfast, and Mom would have cobbler ready for dessert with dinner. MMMMmmmmmmm. :-)
