How many rounds could you possibly need for home defense? As I see it, I'm unlikely to fire more than perhaps 100 rounds of 12 ga. even with repeated "zombie" attacks on my home before something goes "oopsie". It's VERY easy to stock thousands of rounds, and even though I think I'm good, I don't believe I'm good enough to need as much as I have and still be alive.
Yeah, that’s pretty much how I see it too. Not sure I would need 10,000 rds of .223. If I personally need anywhere near 10,000 rds I have to face the facts that I’m probably not going to single-handedly hold off an entire brigade of zombies without a scratch.
When zombies are attacking it is foolhardy to wait until they are within range of a shotgun. A large crowd of them will have you surrounded very quickly. You should also get a high powered rifle to take out as many of them as you can while they are still a couple hundred feet away.
As far as shotguns go use 00 slug loads. Zombie skulls really need a good whack before they go down. They just laugh at bird-shot. Also use your pump model early on for the ones you couldn't pick off with the rifle when you have time to fire, assess, pump, aim and fire. But keep around a reliable semi that holds at least five rounds such as the Remington 1100 series for the very end as they are crowding your front porch when you'll be needing to pick them off in rapid succession. Be sure and remove the shell blocker from the magazine. Unless you are being attacked by Department of Fish and Game zombies no one will cite you.
Remember to replace the shell-blocker you decide to go bird hunting later that day. I've had wardens check before and if the guy's a real jerk he's not going to take the old, "But I was fighting off a zombie attack on my home this morning and needed the rapid fire-power." Believe me, I've tried that one.
Yup. We've got two shotguns and plenty of ammo. But one of my fears is a situation like "Fistful of Dollars" with Clint Eastwood, where the attackers set your home on fire to force you out. Oopsie.
