First, the article refers to the minority who buy instead of lease the vehicles.
Second, household income doesn’t necessarily correlate to wealth. You’ll find plenty of McMansions mortgaged to the hilt, the “owners” (debtors) can’t afford to put furniture in the houses, and they can’t sell because the debt on the house exceeds current market value.
It’s a facade where no matter how much is earned, more is spent each year keeping up a public appearance. Leased vehicles, financed furniture, and vacations paid with credit cards based on expectations of future earnings.
