Why, you may ask, is the meteoric rise of Newt Gingrich giving so many in the Republican establishment a bit of holiday-season indigestion?
Look no further than party leaders' worries about the shaky Gingrich relationship with a category of Americans who may matter more than any other in the 2012 election: independent voters.

Was Seib born YESTERDAY?????????? Does the name JOHNNY McLame ring a bell???? What a dufus!
This is just an establishment, think Rockefeller(s), bandwagon to get the sheep to jump on board for a ride. I’m hoping and have a smidgeon of belief that the sheep have been there before and will not be fooled this time.
Republicans run for office as conservatives and govern as moderates.
It isn't! They understand it perfectly and don't like it one little bit! They are big government elitist no different for those in the democrat party.
If these RINOs are right, why was Reagan ever elected, TWICE? Why is he the most popular recent President, by far?
They said the same thing about Reagan.
Those pesky independants can and will register at the last minute. And looking at all the unrest in the GOP, no wonder the main National polls like RCP still have Newt on top. Mainly because those Polls take a larger sample of all voters across the spectrum.
I think that Newt will do far better than some here are projecting. I would certainly not bet against him.
You could make the argument that he was an effective leader - but he wasn’t.
He was great at getting a majority in the House - but he was not great at leading it. We lost seats while he was Speaker.
If he was so good of a Speaker, then why was he pushed out? That type of thing normally doesn’t happen to people who are doing a good job - in politics or in business.
Because they want Obama to win. It's that simple. The victory of a legitimate conservative would threaten all sorts of crony-ism that allows the elites to profit at taxpayer expense.
Both sides are reliant on independent voters to put them over the top. Neither side has numerical superiority. The key to dhimmicrat success in garnering the indies is freebies - everything from “pie in the sky” to cash payoffs.
The key to pubbies prevailing is convincing the indies that it’s better to teach a man to fish than to give a man a fish. Although that’s the morally and intellectually superior path, it is also a longshot, given the increasingly venal nature of man.
It does no good to entice the strays if you alienate your base in the process. Both Gingrich and Romney have proven to be insufficiently conservative for some right-wingers, but each in their own way may attract the indies.
I think Newt is the superior candidate.
Rush has explained the GOP-E and elected office holders perfectly:
Every damn last one of them who ever hopes or dreams of holding higher office, will either endorse Romney, stay silent, but for sure, will NOT endorse New Gingrich, if they want support and money from either Karl Rove or the RNC for their future endeavors!!
Hence, no or very few endorsements for Gingrich from House colleagues.
Newt does need to think about how he’s going to address the large segment of disaffected former Obama voters. They’ll choke if all he gives them is red meat. When we hear talk about judges being subpoenaed, not even Robert Bork with his proposed Bork amendment (a supermajority of Congress can override any court ruling whatsoever) envisioned that. Gingrich-Huntsman? Out of practicality?
Just look at who is endorsing Romney ....THEY are the establishment or hope to be

Your post made me smile.
GO NEWT GO........
So, I am sitting here thinking “what if crazy old Ron Paul wins Iowa”? Would that really be SO BAD? I mean, if there is one guy that the RINO, “inside the beltway”, Washingtonian cocktail party circuit Republicans fear more than Newt, it is RON PAUL! They would come out against him with EVERYTHING they could throw at him. By doing that, the PACs would stop pounding on Gingrich by South Carolina and Florida and then the wins can just start rolling in!
As I recall there were persons in the House that went after Newt. The names Boehner and Graham come to mind . Perhaps someone on FR has info as to history at the time.
Me too, trisham!
When I registered here in MS, we just register, no party affiliation! I am officially an Independent, woman for GINGRICH!
Seriously? They won’t get money from Rove or the RNC if they endorse Gingrich?
These guys (and yes, I’ve worked on a few congressional campaigns over the years) don’t spend a great deal of time worrying about what Karl Rove, Lindsay Graham or the RNC think or whether they’re gonna get a check.
Rove has definitely got influence - but you ascribe far too much power to him than he actually has.
