Newt Gingrichs popularity as a presidential nominee is increasing in South Carolina, yet most S.C. voters are still unsure of who is the best GOP candidate to support.
Thats the finding of the second Clemson University 2012 Palmetto Poll of a sample of 600 S.C. voters. The Jan. 21 S.C. presidential primary is expected to draw 600,000 voters early next year.
With the demise of (Herman) Cains candidacy, which was high in our November poll, Gingrich has risen in popularity, said Clemson University political scientist Dave Woodard. This surge is being reflected nationwide, as well.

.......yet most S.C. voters are still unsure of who is the best GOP candidate to support.........
75% of them just know it is not Mitt Romney!
A.B.O. (Anybody but Obama)
Woohoo!
GO NEWT GO........
I wouldn’t get too excited... Comparatively speaking, S.C. is a long ways away. If Newt performs badly in Iowa, then this support may no longer be there by the time S.C. rolls around.
Confusing, says the poll was taken Dec 6th thru the 19th - TODAY. So, poll might have all of Newts support in the 6-13th time frame or so - so it might not mean much today -— or it might mean SC is saying “screw you Iowa, we aren’t seeing all the negative ads on Newt and we don’t care how ya’ll vote anyway.”
Just a theory. Or two theories.
This poll is old. It started on Dec 6th. Thats before Newt got attacked by the establishment. He has dropped a lot since then.
Most of these polls useless because they’re old. They’re always running behind whats actually happening in the campaign.
A poll done today would show Gingrich much lower in SC.
