The Republican presidential primary has become a bit feisty, but it will get downright ugly if Ron Paul wins the Iowa caucuses.
The principled, antiwar, Constitution-obeying, Fed-hating, libertarian Republican congressman from Texas stands firmly outside the bounds of permissible dissent as drawn by either the Republican establishment or the mainstream media. (Disclosure: Paul wrote the foreword to my 2009 book.)
But in a crowded GOP field currently led by a collapsing Newt Gingrich and an uninspiring Mitt Romney, Paul could carry the Iowa caucuses, where supporter enthusiasm has so much value.
If Paul wins, how will the media and the GOP react? Much of the media will ignore him (expect headlines like "Romney Beats out Gingrich for Second Place in Iowa"). Some in the Republican establishment and the conservative media will panic. Others will calmly move to crush him, with the full cooperation of the liberal mainstream media.
For a historical analogy, study the aftermath of Pat Buchanan's 1996

Ron Paul and his legions of spam monkeys ain’t gonna win shinola.
“Ron Paul and his legions of spam monkeys aint gonna win shinola.”
****
Based on his recent comments, Paul is trying to win a book contract to write the next “Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

Thanks. We will all move along now.
Iowa has a pretty crappy track record of predicting nominees. A Paul win ther won’t mean much.
He forgot racist, anti-Semitic, Jew-hating, isolationist and 9-11 Truther.
The idea of the RNC getting serious and playing hardball is about as comical as the notion of Ron Paul actually winning Iowa...
The GOP has yet to take off its gloves against Ron Paul because they WANT him to beat Gingrich there.
Newt has to win 2 of the first 3, plus Florida. Otherwise this could get complicated.
We know that Ron Paul is not going to get the nomination. But, will his supporters rebel and stay home on election day or will they support the eventual nominee?
Well if the Republican Party takes “its gloves off to crush” the best & only chance they have of wining the Presidential election then the conservative base will take their gloves off & abandon the party in droves & will work to elect & even more conservative candidate. I do not think they will like that too much so they should reconsider.
You are keeeeerect.
Even better yet the GOP is hoping that Newt and Ron Paul will split a chunk of the conservative vote and let Romney sneak in an unexpected Iowa win.
If you are insinuating that Paul is a conservative and the base supports him, you are as delusional as he is.
Paul is not a conservative.
bingo
Jumping in the middle of your discussion here, but to the libs, living in LA LA land, they are thinking of RP as a conservative splitting the conservative vote. I know, I know, they are delusional.
I know a Ron Paul supporter and he’ll sit out the election if Paul isn’t the nominee.
Scary.
“the conservative base will take their gloves off & abandon the party in droves & will work to elect & even more conservative candidate.”
This is pretty much a foregone conclusion regardless.
I am not sure what Paul’s political realm is. he is certainly an odd ball.
The GOP has painted itself into a corner now though. They can elect Romney or Newt. November will not be pretty. The more conservative tea party people I speak with the more I get the feeling that the GOP is pretty much screwed if it thinks it can count on the base.
A third party revolution is brewing and the GOP, being the stupid party, is about to get blind sided.
Some will, some won’t.
A lot of his supporters are libertarians and/or youth. The libertarians will fall in line with the GOP nominee UNLESS there is a strong independent run by someone (ie: Gary Johnson). The youth voters are more problematic. Historically they only turn out to vote if they are passionate about a candidate...that’s true with both liberal and conservative youth.
LOL They don’t have gloves unless it’s the white kind to test the dirt on your furniture.
Evil voodoo worshiping weirdos from Texas keep voting for this guy!
